Vecna

Vecna was a once-human king and lich from a distant world who ascended to godhood. While he was once considered the most powerful lich to dwell there, over the ages he spent in undeath Vecna became maligned across the multiverse, and was considered the scourge of all civilization.   According to some, Vecna had an obsession with acquiring and maintaining secrets, believing them to be the source of true power. He was precise and calculating in his actions, but was at times prone to bouts of intense rage.   Vecna believed that every being in existence held a single secret that could be manipulated to bring about its destruction. Uncovering that secret and exploiting its truth were the key to gaining dominion over others.

In Kauvet

During the early years of the Age of Lavandin, Vecna sought to conquer Kauvet, but was defeated by a group of adventurers during the events of Wake the Dead. The arch lich's fate was to be forever imprisoned in the bark of Yggdra the World Tree in the eastern swamplands of the kingdom, while his book of vile darkness was watched over by those who had defeated him.   Over a century later, during the events leading up to and encompasing The Foe of Many Faces Returns, the book of vile darkness was stolen on behalf of a member of the royal family, Countess Olympia Mallinger. The countess was the vengeful granddaughter of one of Vecna's rivals and she set out to use the book to usurp both Vecna and her grandfather by conquering Kauvet herself. The countess' foes and allies staged bloody battles attempting to take or keep control of the book, as multiple groups worked to free Vecna for their own selfish gains. Eventually, it was safely returned to its guardians by the owligarchs of Little City, and Vecna remains imprisoned, though Yggdra's hold on him has weakened over time.
