The Stone

Asugul Hammerend (a.k.a. The Stone)

Born Asugul Hammerend, The Stone was a gladiator and investigator from the Merchant's Confederacy working on behalf of Vignere Farms. The Stone was dispatched to determine the cause of a disruption of trade to and from Agrammon, where he became a fan favorite in the Agrammon Gladiator's Layer and directly involved in the Summoning of Balanor. Following the events in Agrammon, The Stone served as the Champion of the Fire Plane on behalf of the Fire Elemental, Infernus.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

The Stone has always been renown for his strength and intimidating presence; even among Half-Orcs, The Stone tends to tower over others, and many avert their eyes from being caught looking in his direction. The Stone’s most identifying feature is the mask or headband he typically wears to cover the fact that his eyes are gone as a result of the pact he made with Infernus.

Special abilities

Magic Sight

Apparel & Accessories

When traveling and in less serious encounters, The Stone typically wears light cloth or leather to allow for a free range of motion in combat, as he hates the feeling of being restricted by heavy armor.
When the need calls for it, he has the ability to summon a magical set of armor granted by the Fire Plane. While he is unsure of the materials used for the armor, it gives the appearance of a strong plate armor that is painted a radiant red and orange, representing the flames of the Fire Plane.

Young Life

Asugul Hammerend was born in a small community in the Eastern Continent. Born to a Orc woman and a Human man, Asugul would have been regarded as an abomination in many civilized cities. In this community, however, Asugul was looked at as a great asset to the community for his strength and willingness to help. In his childhood and early adolescence, Asugul gained a reputation as being as theatric as he was strong; he would often help with construction tasks while flourishing axes and sledgehammers.
At thirteen, Asugul was asked to begin going on hunting trips to help feed the community. Asugul quickly showed proficiency in a variety of weapons ranging from javelins, shorts swords, and crossbows. It was not long before Asugul was leading the expeditions, directing teams of five to ten on a weekly basis.
It was during one of these hunting trips that Asugul felt something was amiss. As his group prepared to make a move on their prey, a dancing flame distracted Asugul, and before he could react, a group of bandits moved on his group, killing several of them. Those that survived — including Asugul and his father — were captured and brought to an outpost at the outskirts of the Merchant’s Confederacy. The group that ambushed Asugul’s hunting party was a group of slave traders who would raid small villages outside of state control and bring them back to less savory landowners of the Confederacy. It wasn’t long before Asugul and his group were auctioned off and he was permanently separated from his father.

Becoming The Stone

Asugul was sent to the estate of Vignere Rothgar, a Half-Elf landowner on the southeastern corner of the Merchant’s Confederacy. Vignere owned a large agricultural operation, which handled farms that stretched for miles. Asugul was dispatched to one of the farms nearest Vignere’s home.
Several weeks after arriving at the Vignere Farms, an altercation took place between Asugul and a group of other farmers who felt that he was setting a pace and precedence they could not hope to keep up with. Asugul — always in good spirits — laughed about it and told them to not complain about lacking his strength. This did not go over well with the other farmers who attempted to beat the Half-Orc.
As luck would have it, the farmers fought the Half-Orc just as Vignere’s traveling party were passing through the farms. Vignere himself watched with amusement as Asugul seemed to playfully handle every farmer that attempted to fight him. Not only was he an impressive creature to witness in a fight, the delight he took in combat was infectious. The noble introduced himself to the Half-Orc and asked if he would care to share dinner with him.
Vignere’s estate was an unknown luxury to Asugul, whose table manners were absent. Vignere told Asugul that he frequently gambled at a few underground pit fighting arenas throughout the Confederacy, and a man of Asugul’s talents had not been seen before. He offered to split the share of earnings if Asugul would complete in these arenas on his behalf.
With nothing to lose, Asugul agreed, and regularly traveled with Vignere across the Confederacy, learning numerous things of politics, business, and — most importantly — etiquette in between pit fights. Asugul soon gained a reputation as being as solid as a rock, to which he and Vignere determined he should only be referred to as “The Stone” during his time in the arenas.

Espionage

Two years into his time as a pit fighter, Asugul began to notice Vignere’s declining mood. When he finally asked what had been troubling him, Vignere informed the Half-Orc that one of his biggest purchasers — the Silverhand Expedition — had ceased buying from Vignere Farms without reason and he had been unable to find a way to make up for the lost revenue. He feared he would have to sell off some of his land as crops were going to waste.
After much contemplation, Asugul offered to investigate the Silverhand Expedition out of the city of Agrammon. He admitted that he was interested in the Gladiator’s Layer which has been growing more and more popular, even in the Confederacy. During his time there, he would secretly be able to investigate who the Silverhand Expedition replaced their goods with and offered to do what he could to sabotage their operation.
Vignere’s mood changed upon Asugul’s proposition. Equipping his combatant with enough money and a ship to travel, he told the Half-Orc that he needed to leverage his reputation as The Stone, and do what he could to mask his relation to Vignere Farms; only by completing these two things would he be able to get to the bottom of the mystery.
And thus, The Stone began his journey to Agrammon, to make a name for himself in the Gladiator’s Layer with his flourishes and showmanship, while investigating who was supplying the Silverhand Expedition in the city.

The Summoning of Balanor

The Stone arrived in Agrammon and immediately made his way to the Gladiator’s Layer to enroll in the Dual Challengers League where he met and fought alongside Drakkeir. While the two won their match, the hounds caged up for the Monster’s Challenge broke loose and attacked the two gladiators. While they put up a fight, they both ended up injured, but alive thanks to the efforts of a few spectators and the Agrammon Internal Security Force.   The Stone — along with Drakkeir and a man named Viktor — was questioned for his involvement with the ruckus; with no evidence directly tying The Stone to the disruption, he was free to stay in Agrammon but would not be allowed to leave until the the investigation surrounding the circumstances was complete. Drakkeir invited The Stone to stay at Ada’s Respite, a popular tavern in Agrammon’s Market Layer where he introduced him to the owner.   With little to do, The Stone agreed to assist Drakkeir with an investigation in one of Agrammon’s Expedition Layers, alongside Viktor and Nadia, a woman that Ada introduced; they were also joined by an Elf, Kalen Ravenmantle, who had witnessed the fight earlier that day. Within the Layer, two additional adventurers — a druid named Ila and a Tiefling bard, Kai — joined the expedition group. During their investigation, the group ran into a variety of dangerous creatures that they were able to defeat, and came across a deceased Dwarf that none of the group recognized. It was within the layer that they discovered a set of armor that was animated by some form of magic. After narrowly defeating this magical armor, the group agreed to bring the pieces back to the administrators of the layer, but The Stone decided to keep the gauntlet — a decision that would forever change the young Half-Orc’s Life.   That night, as the Half-Orc attempted to rest, he heard a voice resonating in his head that called out to him. It introduced itself as Balanor, and said that it was communicating to him through the gauntlet. The Stone was confused by the event, and said he would call the entity “O.G.” for “Ousum Glove.”   As the group of adventurers stayed together during their time in Agrammon, The Stone served as their front-line combatant, and assisted them when he was not participating in the arena fights alongside Drakkeir, where he eventually took first-place. As he spent several days in Agrammon, the voice of Balanor became more prevalent, often attempting to overtake The Stone’s body and align the Half-Orc’s will with its own.   The voice of Balanor persisted until it ultimately overtook the body of Emilia Lumere and began the attack on Agrammon. The Stone — along with the rest of the group — took front and center in fighting back against Balanor’s forces in the city, and ended up in a climactic battle between them and the possessed Titania. When all seemed lost in the fight, a new voice filled The Stone’s head; the Lord of the Fire Plane, Infernus, called out to the Half-Orc and asked for him to fulfill the role of Champion of the Fire Planes to fight back against Balanor’s influence on the Mortal Plane. The Stone agreed. As a result of the pact between him and Infernus, The Stone’s eyes burned away, leaving nothing in its place, but granting him a magical sight that allowed him to see the flow of life and magic in everything around him. In addition to this magical sight, the Stone was able to summon a fiery axe and a magical suit of armor around him, which he used to help defeat Balanor.   Chief Architect Grammoth Silverhand took note of The Stone’s contributions and recruited him to the newly formed Agrammon International Investigation Agency. His first mission was to travel home to the Merchant’s Confederacy and investigate the influence of Ezreal Iantris, the Elf who funded the Cult of Balanor in the city and capture him.
