City of Rickmo

The City of Rickmo is a walled settlement on the south bank of the Calas River near the western extent of the Duchy of Hekmo. It was, at one time, one of the busiest river ports on the entire river. The last 25 years have been hard on the city, however, and the population has declined from 18,000 souls in 206 AF to only 8,900 today. It is the seat of the Briary of Rickmo and is the site of several large family estates belonging to Lord Torum am Nari, the son and heir of Duke Turl am Nari.

Demographics

Very nearly entirely Human, with only 44 Halflings, Gnomes and Dwarves residing within the city walls.

Government

Ruled by Lord Torum am Nari in the name of his father, Duke Turl am Nari. Administrative and logistical matters are typically left to appointed officials like the Mayor, the Town Constable and the Harbor Master

Defences

The City Watch is a militia company of Foot that usually numbers less than 100 men. None are adequately trained or equipped and the watch schedule is inconsistent and less than dependable. Watchmen are paid only pennies a month and are usually the most violent bullies that can be found willing to wear the garb.

What little armor is issued is ill-fitting, ill-kept and often not even worn properly. Weapons are pikes or old halberds, dull swords or rough quarterstaffs.

The Watch is nominally led by the City's Constable,

Infrastructure

In the not-too-distant past, Rickmo was a busy and beautiful example of the latest in engineering and civic design. It was actually quite famous for a series of marvelous derricks that could load and unload massive blocks of local marble and granite from specially built river barges. Sadly, these no longer function and many of the riverside quays and wharfs are so in need of repair as to be unusable.

The city's walls still stand and all but one of the city's gates can be closed and secured in the event of attack, but the walls are not routinely manned and the gates are often left open all night because the gatehouse watch is too drunk to close them. Roads are uneven, pitted and very, very muddy, especially along the riverside streets where season flooding deposits are no longer removed but are left to build up and clog the town's gutters and sewers.
