Kal'rat Great Crater

A very large crater that exists on Kal'rat V, which is owned by the Sulethis Republic.   It is most likely not naturally formed - it consists of a very deep , almost perfect hole that reaches into the mantle. It is massive enough to be visible from orbit. The Hyperion Federation has not yet been able to figure out how the crater has been formed, despite its sheer size. No technology remnants were found by them of any faction, including precursors. However, they have used the crater for mantle and core extraction. Investigations continue, but remain unsuccessful. The HF also doesnt understand why the crater has not visibly decayed brfote they have arrived, covering the mantle.   What they do understand is that a similar structure on a hotter planet would result in the formation of a volcano as the high pressure magma gains a place to leak from. Kal'rat V has a much colder mantle, causing it to be much more solid and prevent that from happening. The planet has no volcanoes. Some theories include that it might have been the site of a strange method to extract materials - some unknown civilization could have come and use Teleporter-like machines to teleport chunks of the planet onto their starship - and refine them in orbit. If they stopped immediately after reaching the mantle though, why would they stop?   Other theories suggested they needed to bore out a large portion of the planet for the materials offered by the mantle - after they have realized there wasn't some material they were looking for. Does this imply that boring so deep is very easy for some civilizations?
