It's no secret that Slaine (pronounced like "SLAH-nyə") had real flower-children New Age hippies as parents. That's why she was given the Celtic name. But Slaine loved her parents and considered her childhood pleasant. She continues to embrace a mystical, New Age lifestyle. She wears crystals and uses a lot of esoteric language. She actually believes in witches and spells, spirits and cosmic forces in the universe. Most people think she's nuts. Ironically, she's more on the nose than even she realizes.
Slaine has practiced Healing Touch since she was a girl. She would occasionally find a wounded animal, like a bird or rabbit, and heal it with her touch. She never questioned it as unusual, or maybe thought it was just her nursing the creatures back to health. Her parents simply figured she had a knack and thought she would maybe become a veterinarian. Eventually, Slaine was wise enough to realize that such powers probably shouldn't be advertised.
Today, Slaine is gifted with a number of psionic powers associated with healing. While confident and experienced, she knows that flaunting and using those gifts would not only swamp her with millions of people wanting to get healed of all kinds of illness, it would impact those whom she can help heal. Usually when Slaine does heal a person, it is either secretly or without giving away her identity.
She imagines that she can talk to animals, but this is one power that Slaine definitely does not have.

Slaine is so even-keeled and calm, it's hard to imagine she has anything to be embarrassed about, nor does she really consider anything a failure—just a "learning experience." The closest thing she might have to an embarrassment is that her older brother, Orion, is a rather conservative politician who has estranged himself from the family. Slaine is more sad than embarrassed, though, and would love to have him back in the family again.
Morality & Philosophy
Slaine is very progressive and liberal, but more in a "live and let live", "can't we all just get along", "all you need is love" kind of way. It comes off mostly as a naive kind of innocence, which inclines a lot of people to dismiss her, underestimate her, or take her for granted. But she's much more informed and intelligent than that. She could rip her opponent apart in a debate, but she'd do it so nicely, it would be hard for anyone to take offense.
Ensemble Philosophy: maybe a unique blend of Apathy and Realism. It's not that she doesn't care, it's just that her goals may not seem in line with the main objectives. As "Apathetic" she may seem aloof or busy, uninvolved or neutral, have a different background or culture from others, and different goals or priorities than other characters, but this is because while the rest of them might be preoccupied with more overt and direct goals, while she is focused on healing. Her belief system borrows from a wide range of esoteric and world religions, such as Gnosticism, Hinduism and Transcendental Meditation, and various mystic strains of Coptic Christianity, Sufism, and the Kabbala. While in most ways she is more right than she realizes, the reality is far different than what is found in a typical New Age bookstore.
