Star Forge

The Star Forge is a station made from unknown Xeno or Host technology that existed in the Aberteen system long before humankind claimed it. The station uses the heat and pressure of the Red Dwarf it is built against to smelt ores with greater ease and in less time than any other known refinery in the universe.

The Port

Travelling to and from the refinery is a severe challenge for most. FreeST has a companion Station in the system known as the Port. Any ship not brave (or stupid) enough to approach the Star Forge directly stops there and boards one of the Ferrys. The Ferrys are custom designed small-travel ships that are build in system and only designed to travel short distances. Though they are limited in travel range, they are loaded down with enough heat and gravity shielding to protect their passengers and cargo and have strong enough engines to escape the star's gravity well.   Strong or not, riding on any of the Ferry's is a harrowing experience. The strain of the ship and struggle of the engines as it enters or exits the gravity well is said to be horrifying to the uninitiated. It is said that FreeST replaces 1 Ferry a year, as any minor malfunction can lead to the ship being sucked into the star or its passengers roasting alive (which generally follows with the Ferry being sucked into the star). Ferry captains tend to be the best of the best, ambitious to a fault, have something to prove, or have a latent death wish.

The Writing on the Wall

The hanger facing away from the Star is the only safe entry and exit from the Star Forge. As such, every visitor has seem the ancient writing scrawled above the hanger door upon their approach. The text does not appear to be any known language, but in English the letters seem to be Y'sihughat Raborshacha. The Ferrymen transporting people and cargo to and from the Star Forge have heavy superstitions regarding reading the words out loud, some even to the extent of pretending the words are not there at all.
