Hearts of the Sea
According to legend, these crystals are the literal disembodied hearts of Estae and Theane, the twin goddesses of the sea. They are both identical, faceted crystals. Each one swirls with many colors that shift almost hypnotically while a mournful, otherworldly song plays.
The Heart of Estae has long been held in the Grand Temple in Mir'assen. Tirasala, the high priestess of the temple, is mystically bonded to it to serve as its protector.
The Heart of Theane was lost to the depths in mythic times. It was only recently discovered by a group of adventurers known as the Cake Squad in the lost kuo-toa city of Nix. It has recently been claimed by the sahuagin king, Icktrik.
After the death of Icktrik, the Cake Squad left the Heart of Theane with Ratagar of Rall in Hnng'yar.
Significance
The Hearts are sources of unspeakably immense magical power, as well as being items of incredible religious significance. For these reasons, they have been treasured by most civilizations in the Dawn Sea, and long sought by the magocratic sahuagin.
Unbenknownst to the people of Mir'assen, the Heart of Estae has long been used to hold the city in the Material plane. For that reason, the marid Shah Orah sought its destruction, so Mir'assen might be returned to the Plane of Water.
This sheer power is a source of worry, as the Heart of Theane is of equal strength, and it was briefly in the hands of Ictrik, who attempted to use its power to conquer the Dawn Sea.
During the battle against Icktrik, a fluke of the Wand of Wonders revealed to Mekis of the Cake Squad that the Hearts were actually wardstones created by the kuo-toa to ward off invasion from the Far Realm. Since the power of the Heart of Theane was almost drained in the battle, such an incursion was threatened. The Cake Squad were just barely able to prevent it.
