Session 35: Saxon Horsies
General Summary
Grimmaz gets up after a night of relaxation ready to ride out to get 10 horses belonging to the de Rais.
Meeting outside the inn, Grimmaz, Mikael Andolf, 10 troops of the de Ath family, and 5 Burgeaters mount up on horses and go to ride out. On the way out, they pass an alleyway where a brutal murder occurred. When out one of the de Ath troops mention that a group of mercenaries might be linked to the murder. The mercenaries are northern and berserkers dressing in wolf skins and used as shock troops. The same group is coming to the end of their contract and planning on moving on.
Going out the east gate it takes a few hours to the southeast.
On hilly meadows, they sneak up to a ridge that looks down onto the Saxon camp where the horses are being kept. The Saxons are trying to break the horses but it looks as if the latter is attached to their original masters. They are kept in a makeshift fort with two guards on the raised palisades, a set of stables with hay, and wood to the east, & a tent structure for the barracks to the south.
They form a plan to wait till night. There they will slip round to the eastern side, climb the palisade with rope killing the guard on that side in the process. There they can get to the horses first and get them out. Then they will set the place alight.
Getting round at night is relatively easy, and two of the troops remain back watching with bows & arrows. Two others take out the guard using their Francisca. They then proceed to get the ropes in place and start climbing. Grimmaz shows off by pretty much doing it with little effort and a fancy dismount at the top.
They quickly remove the ropes and two troops remain outside getting round to the front gates.
Grimmaz quickly finds the dominant horse and gets it on his side before getting the horses tied together to ride them out. Some get on the horses to help guide them and stop any problems.
Then they set the hay on fire.
Afterwards when leaving the thegn, one called Rudger, comes out to see what is happening. Grimmaz rushes him and Rudger hits him while sticking his sword into the ground. Grimmaz kills him easily and rips a pinned on bit of a wolf's tail on his armour. This he plans to hand in to show he has killed a thegn.
Running out, Grimmaz starts to see the remaining Saxons starting to get up and about. The two Burgeater troops kill the remaining guard, and fire a flaming arrow into the barracks.
They make their way back and they get the horses up to Gabrielle de Rais' house while Grimmaz goes to court. Handing over the thegn's badge to Charlemagne, the latter jokes that he might start calling him "the Thegn Slayer".
Afterwards Grimmaz & Mikael make their way to where the horses are and see that there is two guards outside the house near the west gate. Both are big bulky northerners in wolf pelts and looking rather aggressive. Grimmaz introduces himself and tells them that he is there to speak to Gabrielle.
One of them opens the door and shows him into a room at the front while aggressively getting a maid to go and get Gabrielle. She arrives shortly and dismissively tells Grimmaz to get on with his business. Grimmaz tells her about the horses and taking out the thegn. She seems delighted he did, and tells him that he can keep one for himself. She refers to him as a theign killer.
When he leaves he makes a minor slight that reminds her that they serve the Crown and she gives him the stink eye.
Before choosing the horse he dealt with before, Gabrielle tells him that he has a close associate who makes puzzle boxes and if he wants one, he can have one. He says he will think about it.
After this, Grimmaz & Mikael joke that all is fair in love and hate.
Eventually they end up back in court for quite some time staying over for Christ Mass celebrations, feasting and Grimmaz carrying out his Pagan winder practises.
Back to court Grimmaz, Count de Ath and Boss Gitslapper are back in private chambers when interrupted by a knock on the door and a guard entering. He hands over a bag of gold to Count de Ath, and says that it is usual payment from the Thieves of Frankia in Eschbach, and Baldwin says hello. Grimmaz gets a glance at a Kenku standing outside when the door is open and is also told that he left the payment off and is called Arne.
He finishes off his business and is now soon to return to Eschbach with Mickael has already left to set up Grimmaz's return.
