Session 33: Double Dealings

General Summary

Grimmaz has made it to Aachen. There he spends the night, and woken up by Mikael Andolf who accompanies him up to the Palace of Aachen.

They are shown in behind the Noble Families where there is the de Rais, the de Sade, the de Ath and Fitzsimons families are. They are arguing and bickering. Charlemagne is present, and sharply tells them to calm down and deal with other business.

He gets Grimmaz and Mikael Andolf up in from of him. Grimmaz bows and both are given a seat each. Charlemagne signs the orders for Grimmaz as a Duke, and Mikael is now his Captain-at-arms. Both are supplied with a copy, and further business is now dealt with.

A final answer to whether Grimmaz will marry Countess Gabriel de Rais is asked for. Grimmaz politely declines with Gabrielle grumbling in anger.

After this, the de Sade family ask for an interrogator / torturer / executioner to be attached to the Burgeaters which is declined politely as well.

The final part is the Fitzsimons asks to set up a banker at the local Motte-and-Baillie and help set up a local Merchants Guild. Grimmaz agrees to the banker, and they will act as a tax collector too. The Merchants Guild will be looked at later to see what can be done.

Grimmaz is then directed into a side room with Count de Ath, and looking back at Gabrielle. She is staring daggers at him.

In the room is a large pile of food & drink on an ornate table where they sit, and where Boss Gitslapper is sitting. At this point, de Ath gets Gitslapper to sign a memorandum, and then Grimmaz. It changes the name of Goblintown to Gitzburg, and part of the overall Eschbach holdings with Boss Gitslapper personally in charge of it. There is a greasy smear on it from Gitslapper signing it as he is eating a whole chicken. He tells them a few little anecdotes from behind the roast chicken from where he has his face buried.

de Ath also explains that he is a high ranking member of the Thieves of Frankia, and his family has close connections to it going right back. It allows him to keep abreast of information throughout the Empire. Grimmaz them mentions Baldwin and both think he's a good chap, and Grimmaz is asked if he remembers Baldwin's father and he does.

They break for the night after they discuss a Saxon theign called Jakobson who has stole some of the de Rais best horses. If they can kill him and return the horses they may stop Gabrielle from trying to assassinate Grimmaz at least for a while.

On the walk back to the tavern they are attacked by an assassin, who is a Shadar-Kai Elf, and a member of the bladed Pouch. Killed by the guards and Mikael Andolf, they leave it for the guards to dispose of it knowing that the Elf was probably Hired by Gabrielle just to show that she will try to kill him again.

They go to their beds to get ready to attack the Saxons and take the horses back.
