Lieutenant McNair was named “Supervisor for Keeping Midshipman Paolo Garcia Out of the Captain’s Way,” when Paolo was assigned to serve aboard TCSV Onomatopoeia as part of his Academy training. Paolo’s reputation for making stupid jokes preceded him and Captain Terrence wanted him off the bridge and out of sight.

While McNair found Paolo annoying at first, and hated his assignment, they ended up being close friends by the time Paolo returned to the Academy for the rest of the fall semester of 2954.
