Act IIa – To Race or Not to Race?

The rising action part of the novel

TCSV Onomatopoeia has arrived at Prometheus (in Act I), and Trent, Jesse, and Bourbon are on leave in Myrtle's Beach, along with most of the crew and marines.

It turned out that their "friend" Barker from Calypso had moved his tavern to Myrtle's Beach on Prometheus and held Paolo in there, to lure the others to Myrtle's Beach and then get them to help him find a scientist who goes by the codename Daedalus, before the visiting Humbabans. The theory is that Daedalus was the original creator of the Weapon of Mass Destruction known as Medusa's Gaze, and the Humbabans are trying to find him to force him to re-create the weapon for them. Medusa's Gaze must not be allowed to fall into their hands.

The Humbabans are in Myrtle's Beach with the stated intention to compete in the annual regatta, a couple of days later and use that to look for Daedalus. Barker tries to convince Paolo and the others to participate in the regatta too, to prevent the Humbabans from finding Daedalus, or even better, to find Daedalus first and rescue him.
