Exmarre Character in The Thirteen Realms | World Anvil

Exmarre

Petty Prince Exmarre Naolosnaonar

The older son of the ruling family of Noskanar. He was also the Northwest Champion of the Royal Trials which led to the Ascension of Demon King Jurao, and widely considered Jurao's staunchiest competition.

Physical Description

Apparel & Accessories

Exmarre wears fashion that is often impractical and more of an art piece than clothing, and makes frequent trips to the Beastking Realm to keep up with their trends as his home realm has only the infancy of a fashion culture. He has also in the past century after Jurao's Ascenion made a trip to the Human Realm, having heard they too have a thriving fashion culture compared to his home realm.

Personal history

Exmarre is the oldest child of the previous Petty King of Noskanar, Gavaon, though only by a few hours - his brother Joron having a different mother. Both were born of beastly demon mothers, their father being a traditional demon, but Exmarre favored their father in appearance.    As such, it was he their father paid more attention to - ensuring he had the best training and tutors, taking pride in Exmarre's natural affinity for combat - and his rare talent for magic - as practically any demon parent would. Gavaon clearly intended for Exmarre to become the next Petty King - after all, his son was a strong traditional demon, what else could he possibly want to do with his life?    Such a question showed only how little Gavaon knew his son, despite all the attention and pressure he put on Exmarre. Exmarre considered himself much closer with his mothers, Damari and Aega, and even his brother than his father. He was particularly close with Damari, the mother that gave birth to him. He loved to watch his mother work as a seamstress - Gavaon had met her in Mavasnier and been impressed by her work, taking her back to Noskanar with him on a whim though the pair never married. Had Exmarre not been such an impressive son, it was widely believed he would have long abandoned Damari to her own devices, as he did not maintain a relationship with her after their son's birth beyond ensuring she had a comfortable home.    Exmarre grew to love fashion as his mother did after a diplomatic trip to Mavasnier as an older adolecsent where she bid him to visit their family still there, and his cousins taking him several trips though the Beastkin Realm Gate. Seeing the strong culture of fashion in the Beastkin Realm awakened a passion in Exmarre beyond enjoyment of watching his mother work, and he soon spent the majority of his free time learning from her and studying fashion books and history tomes sent by his amused cousins.    Joron, by comparison, wished to become the next Petty King - he was an avid combatant, though lacked the natural genius of his brother, and took part in governmental duties with great satisfaction. But he resembled his donkey beastly demon mother, another woman Gavaon partnered with on a whim and then did abandon - though she at least had noble standing of her own and was well able to take care of them both. Aega initially took in Damari due to their kinship of being dismissed by the same man, and the pair soon after fell in love romantically. As such, their sons grew up together despite their shared father only taking an interest in one.    Due to Gavaon's lack of attention, Joron and Exmarre often commiserated how they would prefer each others' circumstances - for being the favored son meant Exmarre would never gain the approval of Gavaon to become the Demon Realm's first fashion designer (as he self-proclaimed), and Joron would never garner enough favor with the man to gain even a nomination. And the brothers loved each other too dearly to wish to fight over the position, and knew the court would not be pleased with Exmarre throwing the match in his brother's favor.    And then Exmarre fell romantically in love.    Exmarre had many partners - he very rarely felt romantically inclined, and when he did the feeling lasted for only a short time, but he still enjoyed sex and physical companionship with many partners. He would readily agree with those who called him shallow, although he found a wide variety of features attractive - still, most were those others would also agree were attractive.    So when his old head groom for his wyvern retired, Exmarre did not anticipate falling for their replacement, Oresti.    Oresti, a blind, pox-scarred inspired demon that was not impressed with Exmarre's sass - which Exmarre considered to be his third best feature after his fashion sense and good looks. Nothing about the man met any cultural standard of beauty - while his hair was soft and a fetching shade fo white, it only grew in patches; his proximity to humanity was looked down upon; and the scarring from an illness called the Wasting that had swept the city some centuries ago covered most of his body. He'd been blinded by the Wasting as well, leaving his eyes milky in appearance.    Despite his usual shallowness, Exmarre was drawn in by Oresti - his self-assurance and skill as a groom, the way he wore every emotion on his face like a signpost, how he had no fear in calling out Exmarre's poor behavior, and even his stumbling attempts at poetry. Exmarre fell fully and hard - and felt humble when Oresti returned his feelings, feeling he had much less to offer in return.     But when Exmarre made clear his intent to marry Oresti, Gavaon forbid it - claiming the groom was 'hardly fit to be a lover, and certainly beneath being a spouse' for his golden child. Which began Exmarre's resistance against Gavaon's wishes - while he'd never been enthusiastic, he'd never openly opposed the Petty King before being refused his choice in husband. He knew his father was a cruel man - and had always kept in line to spare his family and friends Gavaon's temper.    It caused tensions in the entire court - despite Joron's belief that he could not garner enough support to push to be the next Petty King, a surprising number of nobles were behind him. Particularly those that held positions within the castle and had witnessed Joron's dedication. They were happy to support Joron over Exmarre, especially as Exmarre had no desire for the position either. Oresti's great uncle, Faori , was a noble himself - one who held high regard with the conservative faction in the court through familial respect. Oresti did not share his rank - his grandmother that was Faori's sister having been disowned long before his brith - but he had been raised by Faori, and his great uncle also put his support behind Exmarre for his nephew's sake.    With the divide in the court, it was believed a duel between Exmarre and his father was inevitable - until Demon King Ergirri announced his nomination for his successor. Seeing that the current King intended a commoner General as his successor, breaking a four generation familial line, Gavaon made a deal with Exmarre - that if his son truly gave his all in the Royal Trials, no matter the result, Gavaon would allow him to live his life in the way that he pleased. Exmarre, wise to his father's ways, made Gavaon put this in writing before the Temple of Vemera before he agreed.      When Exmarre had left to take part in the Royal Trials, he went with a heavy heart - he had never met his match in combat before, and feared he would need to serve as King before his life would truly be his own without interference. Indeed, he easily won the tournament for the Northwestern candidates - and nothing he saw of the other winners made him believe he would lose.    Until he saw then General Jurao in action for the first time - and he began to hope. He heard the crowd call the man the Beast of the Battlefield and the Unbreakable Wall, and could could see with ease how he'd won such titles. When it came down to the final battle royale of the five tournament Champions, Exmarre threw all his considerable combat skill and power into the fight - not wanting his watchful father to be able to say he had held back. And though he was the last to fall, fall to Jurao's suprior prowess he did - and gratefully, even thanking the man.    Though Gavaon did try to claim that Exmarre held back, he was prevented by Aeganes, Deity of Combat, declaring that Exmarre had not. For Vemera had paid special attention to the deal Exmarre had made sure was brought before her, and asked her sibling to be arbitor in her stead. Gavaonar could hardly stand against a diety, and so conceded.    So when Exmarre returned home, he was able to marry his love without further conflict - quitting castle politics entirely to throw himself into fashion deisgning full time as Gavaon begrudingly passed his title on to Joron due to pressure form the rest of the court. For when there had been two choices, they had been divided - when only one remained, and one that was capable and known, they would not allow their current petty king's pride to get in the way - nor did they wish to keep a ruler that had attempted to go back on his word before a goddess.    Exmarre and his husband frequently travel to the other cities of the Demon Realm, so that Exmarre might study the current trends of each while attempting to establish himself in an industry that does not yet exist. As they travel by wyvern, Oresti is very pleased - being a great lover of flying, especially by his favorite wyvern - Exmarre's mount, Blue.
