General Summary

Attack of the Frogs

The crew of the Era Dawn finished their journey from Nilespace to Pillarspace, and pulled into the port of Ison in the Columns At the small port on one of the frozen pillars, they were to retrieve their cargo that would be transported to the Rock of Bral. Upon docking, Captain Areti Hex notified the crew that they had one hour in port, aside from the couple crew members who were needed for maintenance on the ship.   Gweneviere Vezden, the quartermaster, finished up inventory and reminded those going for supplies to report back to her. After a short time, at the insistence of her sister, Eris Vezden, the two of them went into port to collect samples and materials. They went to a warehouse, where Eris was able to peek inside and see creatures. She tried to get access, but was told to return with the proper paperwork. Eris then, over the objections of Gwen, began to collect large samples with her pickaxe rather indelicately.   Vic Nel, the first mate, chose to go off in search of food, and made his way to the bar. He also acquired locally made salt water taffy. He hung out with Pelanor Braize and Jars at the bar, before being summoned back to stop Eris from frustrating the locals by taking a pickaxe to their home.   Thera, the medical officer, checked in with all of the crew members, then went to purchase healing supplies for the ship. She found herself making a deal with some hard-selling dohwar (penguin merchants) who added some items to her shopping list. While she was out, she also had an odd encounter with some frog people who ridiculed her and did not seem to be able to speak Wildspace Common.   Satiah, the ship’s navigator, finished recording their path after pulling into port, then went out to explore. She encountered Harth Nightdancer, who was flirting with an ice elemental, and left him to his business. She instead joined Belcepta and studied the properties of the ice. Satiah decided to ask the locals some questions and cast Comprehend Languages on herself. She approached the frog people, but overheard them saying something about how someone would pay well for her, and that the party was more capable than anticipated.     Vic was doing his human resources duties and making Eris hand over her pickaxe, when Satiah came over and relayed what she had heard. The group resolved to gather the crew and notify the captain. Vic and Thera went to go find the captain, while Eris, Gwen, and Satiah went to alert the others. The captain was finishing up negotiations and elected to load the cargo and depart as soon as possible.   Eris, Gwen, and Satiah found Harth in a compromising position with an ice elemental, but convinced him to leave. They gathered Belcepta next, who was being watched by the frog people Satiah and Thera had encountered earlier. Finally, they got Pelanor and Jars from the bar. As they were leaving, one of the frog people shook hands with Pelanor, causing poison to hurt his hand.   The crew readied the ship and left quickly. Captain Hex chose to continue with the plan to travel to the Rock of Bral, in hopes that they would still be able to sell the three moularcampi, or fish mules. She noted that the frog people, angulotls, were not normally slavers and this behavior was unusual. The crew was warned to ensure that the moularcampi did not get wet, or they would grow in size.   Unfortunately, in their attempt to quickly navigate out of the pillars, they hit a water pillar which caused one of the cages to get wet. The moularcampi grew three times its height to the size of the cage and began thrashing. A rock went flying by the ship, and they were attacked by ice mephits. The officers were able to kill one of the ice mephits, prompting the other to flee.   By the time they had dispatched of the mephits, the angulotls’ ship, a Damselfly class spelljammer had nearly caught up to them. As a newer ship, it was faster, and able to catapult rocks and shoot ballistae at the Era Dawn. The Era Dawn returned fire with their own ballistae while attempting to flee, eventually doing enough damage that the angulotls retreated.   The rest of the trip to the Rock of Bral was uninterrupted, though tensions were high among the crew who were unsettled by the events that occurred. Upon landing in Bral, the captain paid everyone their earnings and gave her standard speech inviting everyone to renew their contract. She tasked the officers with finding a new job, purchasing supplies to replace what was expended, and learning more about piracy in Pillarspace.   To that end, Vic and Satiah headed to the Rock Rat, a seedy tavern with a reputation for criminal activity in the Low City. They found a strange situation, the patrons of the tavern seemed to be waiting for something to happen. Meanwhile, Thera, Eris, and Gwen went to the Middle City’s Great Market. There was a disturbance, which turned out to be caused by a beheaded giff in the middle of the market.
