Dohwar

The dohwar are a spacefaring race of merchants that resemble penguins.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Dohwar resemble 3 to 4 ft. penguins. Their chests were covered in white feathers, while the rest of their plummage ranged wildly, from black to green to purple. The dohwar wings are incapable of flight but do allow them to grasp items like a hand, and dohwar have to ungracefully waddle to move.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dohwar mate for life and are monogamous. Batches of eggs are generally referred to as "new wares."

Ecology and Habitats

While dohwar can live in most any astrally standard envivonrment, they prefer to live in arctic and sub-artcic climates near large bodies of water.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The dohwar feed on fish, plankton, and vegetables. While immune to alcohol, they were susceptible to intoxication from ingesting sweet foods. A single apple, for instance, could affect a dohwar in a manner similar to a single tankard of ale for a human.

Behaviour

Insistent merchants, dohwar are pushy, lack commonly agreed upon social skills, and will pester customers until something is bought. While their selection of wares are often impressive, talking with a dohwar can be a tiring experience for most species.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Dohwar society is usually defined by a large, independent groups called Cartels, which varied from around 100 to over 200 individuals. The dohwar traditionally are lead by spellcasters. The head of each Cartel is called the President, and the spellcasters further down the heirarchy were either Executive Board Members or Managers. Managers are also in charge of piloting dohwar spelljammers.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

All dohwar are capable of communicating telepathically with one another in adition to reading other creatures' minds. However, this telepathy could be blocked by races with strong psionic power of their own, such as the githyanki, which earned the ire of the dohwar.   This telepathy is normally mentally taxing on a dohwar, but two mated dohwar are able to seamlessly mend their minds together, allowing them to finish one another's sentences and think the other's thoughts, something most other races found unnerving.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

In addition to the Dohwar language, most dohwar also speak Wildspace Common.

Common Myths and Legends

As a species that values mercantile transactions over all others, dohwar have a unique take on religion. Rather than worship their own dieties, the dohwar have instead created a pantheon from all the crystal spheres they have visited by identifying and worshipping each god of wealth and greed they find. Noted dieties include the dwarven god Abbathor, the Faerunian god Waukeen, the Olympian god Hermes, and more.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The dohwar are not generally liked by most spacefaring races. Their pushy behavior and intentional lack of social skills is viewed by most races as rude. The only race dohwar generally get along with are gnomes, who overlook any social transgressions for the materials dohwar offer.   While the dohwar view themselves as the greatest mercantile rivals of the mercane, its arguable if the mercane are even aware of this one-sided rivalry.
