Aya Turner

Aya Turner

Aya is a young apprentice spaceship engineer who works for the 'Ceresian Scavengers', a company repairing old defunct vessels for resale. She dreams of one day being a pilot and having her own ship so she can leave her hometown of Tellus on Ceres and live life on her own terms. Her life changes when the Jovian Alliance attacks another ship from the Pallas Alliance, sending escape pods raining down on Tellus. Aya has to decide if she will join the alliance or fight them.   Aya Turner comes from a mining colony on Ceres, which is part of the asteroid belt. The colony is a rough and tough place, with many people struggling to make a living. There is a lot of crime and poverty.   She is of average height with long black hair and brown eyes. Aya is slender but athletic, due to her love of climbing and playing Zero-G. She is also skilled with a wrench and loves to tinker with machines.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Aya is skinny and short. She spends most of her time tinkering and reading. As a result, she is not physically fit. Her grandmother tries to make her wear a resistance suit to increase her strength, as her grandmother believes they will one day return to earth, but Aya has little time for this. Aya is not physically strong, she has never been in a fight, and never even hit anyone or held a gun. She is also quite a little squeamish and terrified of explosions as she remembers the day Io fell.

Body Features

Aya has a secret "Jovian Personal Computer" or JPC embedded in her left forearm as a result of her early childhood on Io within the Jovian Alliance Territory. Although the computer is no longer connected to the Jovian Network, she can still upload digital information, or connect her own computer to other computers such as Max, ships' computers, or air conditioning units to troubleshoot or run diagnostics. This is the reason she is such an engineering prodigy and although she would like to tell people about her computer, she has to keep it secret otherwise people would think she was working for the Jovian Alliance.

Apparel & Accessories

Aya Turner typically wears a simple outfit of jeans and a T-shirt when she is not working. She likes to wear clothes that are comfortable and allow her to move around easily. When she is working at the shipyard, she wears overalls and a hard hat.

She has also done helped smugglers by reworking engines and creating voids that can be used to conceal people, weapons, or contraband. She is a very skilled engineer and has a natural talent for working with machines.   Aya is grateful for her job at the shipyard. It is a stable job that allows her to support herself and her grandmother. She loves working with the ships, and she is always excited to see a new one come in to be repaired. Even though it is not her dream job, she knows it is a good place to start.

As a result of her experience, Aya fears being trapped, whether it's in a physical place or in a situation. She also fears not being able to achieve her dreams.   Aya has also been traumatized by the things she has seen in the asteroid belt. The poverty, crime, and violence have all taken their toll on her. Aya can be impulsive and rash. She can also be quite stubborn. Sometimes Aya doesn't think things through before she acts, especially when she is afraid.   Aya worries she can never earn enough money to leave Ceres and no matter how hard she fights, she will never be good enough. She also worries that she is not a talented engineer and is 'cheating' by constantly using her JPC and that she will be found out and lose her job at the shipyard and be rejected by her community for being Jovian. Aya has a crush on her mentor, Constance, a fellow engineer who is excellent at her job and is able to take apart any ship's engine from the last 100 years and put it back together with her eyes closed, Aya is terrified of her but would also do anything to please her.

She has only killed in self-defence or to protect others. Aya also has a strong belief in justice. She does not believe in revenge, but she will not hesitate to punish those who have wronged her or her friends.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Aya has always dreamed of leaving Ceres and seeing the rest of the solar system. She hopes to one day be a pilot and own her own ship. Aya wants to be a pilot and have her own ship so she can travel the solar system and see new things and earn money to build a better life for herself and her Grandmother, Cécile Tanaka without having to rely on others.   Aya fears being stuck in Tellus forever and living in poverty for the rest of her life but she also worries about what will happen to her grandmother and her robot when she leaves Ceres and isn't sure if they will be able to look after one another. Aya Turner needs someone or something to believe in her, to help her achieve her dreams. She also needs a way to protect herself and the ones she loves.

Likes & Dislikes

Aya's favourite food is the traditional Ceresian dish of "stew and dumplings". It is a hearty meal that is filling and cheap to make. Aya's grandmother makes the best stew and dumplings, and she always saves some for Aya when she comes home from work.    She is never happier than when she is in the cockpit of a shiny repaired vessel that is ready to head to its new owners, and she hates saying goodbye to every ship that passes through.   Aya feels most threatened in small spaces that she cannot escape from. She has to balance the thrill of being in the cockpit or tinkering with a vintage ship's subsystem with her claustrophobia. But she can never admit this or she would lose her job.

Vices & Personality flaws

Aya has struggled to think about people beyond her immediate family, think about the consequences of her actions, or think about the people who might be affected by her actions. She is also very focused and determined, especially when it comes to earning credits and currency. As a result, she has made some morally dubious decisions in the past, including helping smugglers, stealing from the mining corporation on Ceres, and handling goods she knew to be stolen.

Social

Hobbies & Pets

Aya's favourite hobby is tinkering with vintage ships. She loves to take them apart and see how they work. She is also an expert at repairing them. Aya has a natural talent for engineering, and she is always able to figure out how to fix even the most complicated problem due to her secret JPC.    Aya also enjoys climbing and has spent many long afternoons working through the routes along the crater walls around the edge of the Tellus.

Wealth & Financial state

Aya is an outcast. She is not truly Ceresian as she knows she was born in the Jovian Alliance, but nor does she feel she is a true citizen of theJovian Alliance, as she only has vague memories of living on Io before the quake. She is a low-class ragamuffin, with few possessions and little social status, but because many around her are also working-class miners, they often think she is uppitty for trying to improve her lot. Most of her classmates have become miners except for a few who joined security, or who work in Tellus Market.

Best Friend

Aya Turner's best friend is Max, her robot. They have been best friends since she was a child. Max has always been there for Aya, no matter what. He was the one who rescued her from the earthquake on Io and brought her to Ceres in a tiny escape pod, and although he was only 'following procedure', she has always known he will be there for her no matter what.
