Io Moonquake

DATE: October 2nd, 2240
LOCATION: New Atlantis, Io
DEATH TOLL: est. 10,000
On the morning of October 2nd, 2240, a massive eruption occurred at the volcano Tvashtar Patera. The eruption was so powerful it created a 500-kilometre (300 mile) long plume of sulphur and sulphur dioxide that reached high into the atmosphere. This plume drifted over the city of New Atlantis, and within minutes, the city's bio-dome was covered in a thick layer of ash.   The intense heat from the ash, coupled with the quakes caused the bio-dome to break in several regions within minutes. Due to the sudden and extensive damage, the backup shields were not able to be activated in time. As a result, the entire city was exposed to the Io environment.   The resulting conditions were catastrophic. The extreme cold and toxic fumes proved fatal for many of the residents who were unable to reach safety in time. The quakes also caused extensive damage to the infrastructure of the city, and much of it was left in ruins. In total, over 10,000 people died in the quake, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history.   Despite the devastating loss of life and property, the colony has slowly begun to rebuild. In the years since the disaster, new construction techniques and safeguards have been put in place to help prevent another tragedy from occurring. Although New Atlantis will never be the same, the Io colonists have shown their resilience in the face of adversity and remain determined to create a new future for themselves and their children.   A day of mourning is held every year on October 2nd to remember those who lost their lives in the Io Moon Quake. The disaster has also served as a reminder of the dangers posed by living on an active volcanic world. Despite the risks, the colonists of Io remain proud of their home and continue to work towards making it a safe and prosperous place for future generations.
