Ryoi Shiawase

Ryoi was a member of the Shiawase Family and an executive of the Shiawase Corporation. The black sheep of the family, Ryoi felt disconnected to the corporate world of his family, generally remaining neutral in the conflicts of his siblings. In 2049, his sister Soko Shiawase attempted to kill his brother, Sadato Shiawase, but in the attempt Ryoi was killed instead. Despite nominally being dead, his ghost is said to haunt the family house. A spirit-channeler named Jerri Howard claims to speak for Ryoi, making the decisions for how his votes in the company are used.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Ever the contrarian, Ryoi never underwent the leonization procedures that keep the rest of his family looking so young. This means that, prior to his death, Ryoi looked about as old as he actually was. He did age gracefully, with a youthful glow well into his 50s, but compared to his siblings he tended to look extremely aged. This, ironically, made him look the most like his father Emori late into his life, drawing a parallel between the black sheep of the family and the former house head.

Personal history

Despite being a member of the Shiawase family, Ryoi generally didn't partake in the corporate side of the family and so doesn't appear much in public record. After coming of age, Ryoi took up minor positions in the company, but stayed out of the political machinations that defined the careers of his father and siblings. This lead to tension with his father, Emori Shiawase, who tended to only value that which could grow his little empire, but Ryoi's disdain for his father meant that this wasn't exactly a negative for him.   When Emori died and his empire passed down to his kids, Ryoi gained a decent share of the company, but his siblings, Sadato Shiawase and Soko Shiawase, ran the company without him, only ever requiring an occasional vote. Ryoi used his voting rights primarily to keep things running without his presence as much as possible, at least up until his death.    During the late 2040s, escalating tensions between Soko and Sadato lead to Sadato arresting Soko's fiance. In rage, Soko arranged for an assasin to kill Sadato, the first attempt at which failed and the second attempt of which inadverdently killed Ryoi. As funeral preparations began, rumors spread through the Shiawase estate that a ghost haunted the building. Upon hiring a spirit-channeler named Jerri Howard, the family learned that this ghost was supposedly Ryoi himself, who used Howard to speak from beyond the grave. Howard now directs Ryoi's shares according to his desires, which tend to focus on keeping the company as locked down as possible. Both Soko and Sadato have been aggravated with this prospect, but since they acknowledged that Ryoi spoke from beyond the grave they've had a hard time shaking his presence without losing face on the international stage.

Relationship Reasoning

Ryoi and Soko got along cordially enough, but Ryoi pointedly stayed out of the conflict with Sadato, making him an adversary for Soko. Although Soko's actions lead to Ryoi's death, she notably feels bad for her actions, for which Ryoi seems to have forgiven her.

Relationship Reasoning

As far as Emori was concerned, Ryoi did not exist and Ryoi himself seems to have preferred it that way. The corporate business never seemed to be important to Ryoi, so he kept to himself as much as possible.

Sadato followed in his father's footsteps in many aspects of his life, including his relationship with Ryoi. Ryoi never seems to have reciprocated Sadato's disdain, but Sadato made clear on many occasions that he doesn't consider Ryoi a true member of the family.

Relationship Reasoning

For most of his life, Ryoi very much loved and cared for his daughter, who seemed to equally love her father. Unfortunately, Ryoi didn't really leave the world when he died and since his presence could still be confirmed his assets couldn't leave his name. This meant that when Reiko should have finally had the chance to step into the political sphere of the Shiawase Corporation, instead she was sent back to the wings, something she very much holds her father accountable for.
