Emori Shiawase grew up in the chaotic aftermath of World War II, during which
Japan experienced large-scale efforts to rebuild the country. Several of his family members owned smaller companies focused on infrastructure, which saw impressive growth just after the war. As Emori came of age, however, these companies started to slow down. Japan quickly modernized to catch up with the rest of the world, so work for infrastructure-focused companies decreased. In 1989, Emori decided to consolidate his family's companies under one name; the
Shiawase Corporation. Under his ownership, the company found dozens of opportunities both within Japan and in the greater Asia area to expand and grow.
Alongside the corporation's growth, Emori's family also grew. He had three children, all of which were born in the years after Shiawase Corproation formed. Of the three, Emori seems to have favored
Sadato Shiawase the most, although his may have been more out of manipulative control than actual familial love.
Soko Shiawase, his oldest child, was notably skipped over in succession for Emori's empire, leading to anger between both her and Emori and her and Sadato. The youngest of the three,
Ryoi Shiawase similarly saw little attention compared to his older brother, but seems to have handled it better, as he never seems to have been much for the corporate life. With all three of his children, Emori demonstrated the same focus he showed in his professional life; if it could make him money and expand his influence, he liked it. If not, he set it aside.
The early 2000s saw Shiawase grow from an international to the first megacorporation. With the
Shiawase Decision, the corporation gained not only the right to build nuclear reactors in the US, dominating the energy market in the country, but also gained extaterritoriality. Emori cleverly used this new benefit to his advantage, rapidly expanding Shiawase into as many un-regulated industries as possible before disappearing into the background as other corporations rose up to match Shiawase. As the
Corporate Court came together, Shiawase largely supported its creation, but did not actively contribute to it, instead letting its fellow megacorporations take the brunt of the effort. Although his children would weaken the corporation in the years to come, they always followed this same tactic of working in the background and keeping Shiawase's reputation as gentle as benign as possible.
Emori's stance on the
Awakening lined up with his stance on everything else; he only cared as far as profit was concerned. He pushed to keep UGE-affected individuals out of his business, as it was bad optics, but the company's policy towards metahumans relaxed as they became better understood in the following years. He seems to have had a better stance on metahumans that Sadato has towards the end of his life, but unfortunately he didn't live to further develop Shiawase Corporation's stance on metahumanity. In 2019, Emori suffered heart failure that put him in the hospital and would ultimately take his life. Although he handed his empire to his son, Sadato didn't have the experience to initially hold off attacks from distant Shiawase members. Sadato eventually regained control of the corporation, but still deals with internal conflicts to this day.
