Town Centre Geographic Location in The Secrets of Harthill | World Anvil

Town Centre

Located in the south central area of Harthill, the Town Centre district is the administrative and commercial heart of the town and is the most likely place for people from the town’s other districts to rub shoulders with one another.

Demographics

Of all of the districts of Harthill, the Town Centre has one of the most mixed demographics, with upper class citizens mixing with middle and lower class ones, with all residing relatively close to one another. The reason for this is that the Town Centre is the only district that has a boundary with all of the other four areas that make up Harthill, which makes it somewhat of a class melting pot. In addition, as the part of town with the highest density of shops, services and entertainment venues, people from all over the town regularly come to the Town Centre to shop or seek out diversion.   Having said that, the streets themselves tend to be relatively segregated by class, not out of any concerted measure to keep people from different levels of society from mixing, but more because the price of property and/or rents in certain streets is higher than in others, with the result that different social bands are priced out of certain streets.

Infrastructure

As it is within the interests of the town’s authorities for the Town Centre to look presentable and cared for, great pains have been taken to ensure that the infrastructure of the district is well taken care of. The area’s roads are well maintained, as is the street lighting and the water and electrical services. During the very infrequent incidents of power outage, it is always the Town Centre district that is prioritised to be brought back online first, lest the town’s legislature be embarrassed by an inability to function.   Of all the districts, the Town Centre has the highest density of shops, boutiques, restaurants, bars and clubs than anywhere else in the town.

Architecture

As befitting its status as the administrative and commercial centre of the town, the Town Centre district is predominantly made up of grand, elegant Georgian town houses and neo-classical buildings, both the Townhall and The Theatre Royal are large neo-classical buildings, which were designed specifically to be eye catching and imposing. In addition, away from the central focal point of the district, Hart Square, there are a number of streets of large Victorian terraced townhouses, rivalling the residences of Green Glades in their grandeur.

Tourism

Of all of Harthill's districts, the Town Centre is the most geared up for the visit of tourists. It has the largest concentration of hotels within its boundaries, and the contains publicly accessible attractions such as the Buchanan Museum; as well as cultural institutions, such as the The Theatre Royal and; entertainment spots, such as The Goat's Horn. The large number of shops within the district, Llewellyn's Department Store in particular are also well trafficked by tourists who visit Harthill.

Notable Locations

As the district is the administrative heart of Harthill, the Townhall, which contains all of the bureaucratic and administrative offices needed by the town is located at the northern end of Hart Square. In addition, the Constituency Office of Harthill’s Member of Parliament is also located off Hart Square.   Only one of Teliávus University'scolleges is located within the Town Centre, St Augustine College. However, three of the University’s faculties, along with the Buchanan Museum are located within the district:
  • Faculty of Archaeology
  • Faculty of Classics
  • Faculty of Fine Art
In addition, a number of Harthill's more notable leisure facilities are located in the Town Centre district, including The Theatre Royal, The Goat's Horn and Llewellyn's Department Store.
