Green Glades

Spanning the approximate area of the north-west of the town of Harthill, Green Glades is regarded by all of Harthill’s residents as being the ‘posh’ part of town. Green Glades is a picturesque collection of wide, leafy streets, with large, mostly residential buildings, home to the great and the good of the town.

Demographics

The sheer expense of most of the houses in Green Glades means that the area is predominantly inhabited by upper and upper-middle class residents of Harthill. This means that the, so-called, great and the good of the town tend to live in this district, including the industrial magnates of the Harthill, the Pinkerton Family and the The McIntyre Family, and historically wealthy families such as the Buchanan Family.   People from other social classes do live in the district and the poorest of Green Glades residents tend to either be servants who reside in one of the larger houses, or people who had the fortune, or misfortune depending on your point of view, to own property in the area before it became the hub of opulence that it is now. Whilst the former tend to live in basic but comfortable conditions within the servants quarters they are allotted to, and find themselves clearly rooted within the class and hierarchical structure of the area, the latter often find themselves to be maligned by their richer neighbours, and constantly under pressure to move on somewhere more befitting of their station, such as Brewer's Inn or Hart Harbour.

Infrastructure

The collective wealth of Green Glades residents, along with their formidable collective lobbying ability amongst the government of the town and beyond, means that the infrastructure of Green Glades, such as the quality of the roads and other public services, tends to be a cut above the rest of Harthill. It tends to be the case that any civic improvements rolled out across Harthill tend to arrive in Green Glades first, for example, it was the first district of the town to get street lighting.   In addition, Green Glades benefits from having St Luke's Hospital & Sanatorium within its southern section, giving its residents a much greater proximity to the largest medical centre in the town than most others.   Interestingly, though a number of small shops, mostly specialist boutiques, have premises in Green Glades, the price of the property and the higher demand for residential buildings in the Green Glades area, means that it has one of the lowest proportion of shops per person in the whole of Harthill. This is seldom seen as a drawback, however, as most of the residents can either pay for groceries and other goods to be delivered to them, or have servants who can be tasked with buying goods and sundries from other parts of town.

Architecture

Befitting its reputation as the most affluent district of Harthill, the vast majority of the buildings in the Green Glades area are large, spacious Victorian terraces, with a number of near palatial mansion houses sprinkled amongst them. Property in the Green Glades area is highly desirable, as any people want to reside in the area that will give them an automatic boost to their social standing. Whilst there are some buildings that have been turned into flats, most of the structures in Green Glades are single units, designed to house a single family, or extended family, along with household servants.

Tourism

Whilst little of the infrastructure of the Green Glades district has been specifically built with tourism in mind, a large number of the tourists who visit Harthill will doubtless take a turn around the Glamorgan Botanic Gardens, hire a rowing boat on its lake, or marvel at the ancient wonder that is Myrddin's Stones.
