Olivia, Oracle of Pakani

A living ghost

Oracle Olivia Faye

Head Elder... what a difficult position. My gifts... my training... have given me this post; one which I will carry for a lifetime.
– Olivia Faye
Olivia Faye, Oracle of Pakani and Head Elder, was one of the most powerful people on the island of Pakani. She is remembered for leading her people through the Plague of Pakani, Mui Campaign, Dakuina (Great Storm), and other extreme natural disasters. She is a magister of the highest calibre, using her luck magic mainly to try to gain foresight on the fate of her people. She was killed in action leading a charge during the Defense of Pakani.

As Head Elder of Rienapol

Although Olivia accomplished much before the Dakuina (Great Storm), she is best remembered for what she did afterwards. Olivia, possessing the Veil of Pakani, peered into it after the natural disaster, revealing a crystal clear, unclouded image of her slumped in the midst of her enemies, with the whizz of crossbows and the clang of sword on shield in the background. With the Veil of Pakani, the clearer the image is, the more likely it is going to occur, and this was the first time a fully unclouded image appeared.   The choice was sufficiently clear for Olivia: there was going to be war, and she was going to perish in it. The only question she now had was what side she would be on. Even as she administrated with skill throughout the Plague of Pakani and its accompanying famine, saving hundreds of lives, she still knew that her death would soon come, and became only more fearless, more valiant, during the times of trouble.   Olivia wrote her will. She settled her debts. And when the bandits came to sack Rienapol, she was ready. She charged into combat, head up, eyes forward. Except she didn't die. She repelled wave after wave of overwhelming attacks, without dying. She began to wonder whether she was meant to die, or whether the Veil had lied. Once the objective of the rearguard action was completed, she wondered whether to selfishly take the glory of dying valiantly against a massive foe.   But suddenly, she came face to face with Ravana, the Bandit Commander. Ravana drew her short sword, engaging Olivia in a duel. Olivia, outclassed, started falling back. If she wanted to die heroically, this was her chance, engaging the younger and fitter commander of the whole bandit force. But instead, Olivia, realizing her administrative prowess would be needed back at Pakani, rejoined her retreating force, headed towards the Leylan Heights for the defense of Pakani.

As City Commander of Pakani

That elder... she was going to die in battle anyways, and could have done so here, the greatest of heroes. But she decided to retreat to fight another day. I have nothing but respect for this enemy. May she live to meet me again.
– Ravana
Olivia then worked on administrating the last major loyalist city of Pakani, manning the western regions of Pinae Tais. Once, she was able to meet Ravana during talks before the battle guaranteeing the security of citizens and property, regardless the outcome of the battle. Despite being on different sides of the conflict, they respected each other's spirit, and Olivia made a small note in her will that if she died, the Veil would go to Ravana, who was the most fit for its use.   In the dead of night of the second day, under a moonless sky, Olivia noticed Plerimon, Ravana's second-in-command, preparing a small group of boats to outflank the enemy at night. Silently, she drew her strongest longbow and loosed a flaming arrow, striking the ship's sail and lighting it aflame. Then, with the new light of her target, she fired another arrow, penetrating the madman's skull and ending his life.   As the battle drew into its third day, Olivia remanned her small post in Pinae Tais, which was relatively underdefended due to being far away from the Leylan Heights. However, she suddenly received a troubling report from a dying scout: a large flanking force of five hundred rebels had been seen moving through the forests near her station. Olivia gathered what troops she could, which numbered about sixty plus forty others that had come from the city to give a report. She then charged the enemy twice despite her inferior numbers, giving them no time to get into phalanx formation and inflicting severe casualties. However, the unaffected right wing of the enemy, itself one hundred strong, flanked Olivia's forces.   Olivia, wanting to boost the morale of her embattled troops, drew her bow and fired at the enemy commander, hitting him in the neck and chest. She had now been responsible for the deaths of both of Ravana's second-in-commands. Her forces, reinvigorated, formed a defensive arc directly outside the forest, firing longbows into the distance and spearing any who came close.   However, her numbers were now cut to barely sixty, and even though she fought valiantly, Olivia was mortally wounded by a longbow arrow. As she lay dying, she saw the relief force led by fellow elder Kakalina Hang joining the fray. Her voice now barely a whisper, she exhaled, "the fatherland or the grave," before dying peacefully in the tall grass.
