Southbridge District
Southbridge is the only official delineation for the neighborhood district south of the main branch of the Roots of the Sea that reach into Gavenlow, starting higher up in the mountain springs. The name itself is largely a play on the true nature of the district, which resides under the 5 mile stretch of High Bridge. Because of this, its occupants more commonly refer to their home by its more literal title, Underbridge.
The slum district resides on useless swampland, too soft to service proper construction, so it was always home to the poorest of the city, a minefield of ramshackle sheds, shacks, black iron gates, tilted brick walls, raised oak walkways, and ill-constructed government buildings of once polished stone, now caked in dry mud and sinking at a canted angle from the rock solid High Street District just a few miles north where the valley is firm.
Major features of Southbridge include the workman's dock where the dirty end of the river trade takes place, as well as a short march to the sulphur mines, dozens of pubs, gambling dens, the ass end of the sewer system, scattered and impermanent marketplaces along the byways. The main Southbridge Market runs along a short stretch of The Trail of the Dead against the sheer cliffs that separate Southbridge from High Street.
