The Southbridge Gallows
Also called Gallows hill, the arena of execution in Southbridge is a humble hill with a dozen stone seats and standing room for a crowd to gawk and jeer. The hill itself reaches to nearly five meters below the bottom scaffolding of High Bridge where a platform hangs. Here, public executions are performed, bodies hung above the hill in plain view of all of Southbridge.
In this way, those Underbridge are reminded that justice comes from on high.
Purpose / Function
To publicly display the Emerald Forces's justice.
Alterations
Though the gallows used to be level with the hill itself, local authorities found too often the bodies would be tampered with, desecrated, or robbed when left out on display for a period of time. Rather than take the bodies down immediately following the execution, the magistrate of the era decided to raise the platform to the bridge so that the bodies would swing just out of reach undisturbed.
Architecture
The gallows can be accessed directly from High Bridge above, or by signaling the High Bridge guard to lower a wooden cage attached to a pulley system that can be used like a manually operated elevator.
