Gavenlow

Gavenlow is the capital of the Scepter.   Notable districts include:   High Street District.   Southbridge District.   Giant's Brawl, the sprawling and steep slopes that lead into the Spine, made of boulder fields, treacherous switchbacks, and narrow trails along windblown cliffs. Only a few goat herders and mountain folk live among the crags. The entire district serves as a nearly impassable barrier between High Street and the palace district carved into the mountain. Bellas-Black Avenue, the colorful business district, primarily housing the non-trade end of business in Gavenlow: law offices, meeting halls, domestic services, psychics and palm readers and diviners and the like, guild trade halls, records, architecture firms, art galleries, fine bath parlors, etc.   The Palace District, also called the Palace Wall, as it is a large district largely carved vertically into the side of the Spine, with a view that leers down on the rest of Gavenlow from high in the clouds.   Elvenstone District, commonly called Old Town or Banditslane.   Esmeer District, an open plain that holds the gardens, zeppelin air fields, and the military training grounds and main barracks.

Demographics

Gavenlow's demographic makeup is predominately human, with a few antique regions populated by elves, and some dwarves and gnomes shuttled in for industrial labor. The city sees many races, however, and few faces would be surprising to see among the dense population.

Government

Gavenlow is the technology beacon of the continent and what parts of its government isn't openly bureaucratic dullards is in the pocket of the dominant local industries that focus on transportation.

Defences

Gavenlow has the tightest border security and checkpoint features in the known world, and although thousands of people move through and across it daily, its actual residents find it nearly impossible to cross outside its borders without the means or clout to pass security.

Industry & Trade

Transportation, travel as service, mining, fuel, and a robust but contained entertainment strip.

Infrastructure

Gavenlow is a city built up around and largely consisting of a central transportation station that is the heart of the valley and nation. The massive demands for fuel require hundreds of industrial plants and mines and shanty towns to house its workers. Smoggy and grim, Gavenlow is still a colorful cultural center--entertaining many dignitaries, politicians, artisans, and celebrities--though few would take up permanent residence. The city is finely gilded, but rusted beneath.

Assets

Common sights in the city, both natural and constructed:   Banks and currency exchange, barracks, guard house, monastery, tinker shop, florists, alchemists, printing press, stable house, manors, protective walls and natural wall formations, paved streets of cobblestone, gravel, marble, brick, paths of raked earth and sand, gardens, municipal parks, sewers, re-purposed elven halls, paint and pigment shops, a grand central tram station, zeppelin ports, docks and warehouses along the river, factories, armor shops, weapon shops, forges, gallows, brothels, an opera house, mummers stages, traveling shops and stalls, jewelers.   Southbridge has a smiliar variety, though of notably poorer quality, and wanting quantity.

Geography

A northern river port-city with high speed rails that spiderweb out in every direction along the valley, with some traveling alongside the Roots of the Sea and others tunneling into the Spine of the World.

Natural Resources

Rose sulphur, various ores, hot springs. The rest of Gavenlow's needs are carted in from the surrounding valley and imported and shipped up the river, along the tram routes, or by air.

RUINED SETTLEMENT
100 BPE Gavenlow was a bandit-occupied ruin. The ruins lay dormant before that for a thousand years, when the last traces of its Elven residents began to disappear.
