High Bridge
High Bridge is a five mile long modern wonder of architecture, a direct route from the farmlands and gardens of the Scepter valley to the lower end of High Street in Gavenlow.
The bridge is a two lane highway, one fast tracked for traveling dignitaries and militia movement, the other five times as wide reserved for lower toll costs, usually traveled by merchants with livestock, larger wagons, or migration movement.
The toll for the Wide Lane is 5 SP, and you must pass a cargo search by the guards.
The toll for the Narrow Lane is 1 GP, and you must pass the travel requirements (most often meaning the guards may turn a blind eye for the right price).
Purpose / Function
Though by no means the most common or quickest route into Gavenlow, High Bridge is the oldest and most traditional road in. Being a less common path, it has, since the introduction of the rail system and its high security checkpoints, become the favored route of those wishing for themselves and their cargo to remain relatively anonymous.
Alterations
Though it was once top priority, in the last ten years, High Bridge has received less and less funding for repairs and staffing.
Not a few living in Southbridge have been left with welts and bruises on the head from a loose bolt or nail hailing from the sky above.
The road was initially a straight shot from the gardens to High Street, but there were soon added dozens of elevated features alongside the route to cater to the concerns of its travelers. In its heyday, the bridge was host to stations for watering and feeding pack animals and horses, rest stops, latrines, restaurants, shops, guild houses, small inns, and even tourist shops. Now, many of the buildings lay vacant, hanging suspended beside the bridge hundreds of feet in the air, some ready to fall apart at the first sign of a stiff breeze.
Architecture
The upper construction and trusses gleam with a highly polished almond copper, while the supports are both stone pillars and wire cords thick as a man bolted to the mountain itself.
History
High Bridge was constructed shortly after the founding of modern Gavenlow. Its two lanes were once called after Yellow and Blue, but the Twins disliked the asymmetry to the titles and the nicknames quickly fell out of favor.
