Vaunens Ethnicity in The Savage Woods | World Anvil

Vaunens

Vaunens are a Veiamic people from the east. They speak the Vaunen language, which is mutually intelligible with other Veiamic languages, although they have a hard time understanding Taalites.   Their lands were traditionally sparsely forested, and dominated by open fields and marshes. Today, they are concentrated in Lake Joema and the man-made island made by connecting the main rivers to the west of the lake. This island is currently the largest area of uninterrupted open fields in Veiama, and the Vaunens, most of whom live in the nation of Falla, take advantage of that with significant agriculture.

Music

The most distinctive part of Vaunen music is its use of horns. Loud, bombastic music that can echo across the marshes is the archetypal Vaunen sound. Traditionally made from carved wood or animal horn, today they are usually made from brass. These instruments are associated with Lietei, the god of the sun and time. Magic produced with a horn is usually powerful, but less precise. It is very difficult to use a horn for healing or illusory magic, but offensive magic is quite strong.   All Vaunen towns begin and end the day with a designated soloist to play in the sun, and again to bid it farewell. Vaunens travelling in other lands report feeling disoriented and restless without these songs to bookend a day.   It is bad luck to play a horn at night, which is when Vaunens put down their instruments and focus on vocal music. The prohibition on using their instruments after dark means that they have a strong culture of acapella music. Even small children are invited to join in group performances, and Vaunens believe that singing in large groups, and being able to sing in tune with everyone else, is an important part of strengthening community bonds. They say that with a large enough choir, small humans could sing up a mountain.

Major organizations

The majority of Vaunen people today live in the nation of Falla, where they are the majority group and receive preferential treatment in society. They are a minority group in other nations, becoming decreasingly common the farther west one goes.   In the past, most of them were united in the Republic of Alabren.
