Eruptor

In the two thousand years since the beginning of the Volcanic Era, when heat from deep in the ground was first used to drive machines, the Cluster Islanders have studied the volcanoes and learned how to influence them.  One of the most recent and horrifying developments is the Eruptor, a device capable of intentionally triggering a volcanic eruption.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

At the core of the Eruptor is a chamber split into halves by a membrane. The halves are filled with two different liquids that, when combined, react to form a gas. The chamber is surrounded by thick metal half-shells joined by a belt of different material, the properties of which determine how long it takes to melt through to the membrane and trigger the chemical reaction. The resulting rapid expansion sends a shock wave through the surrounding magma, triggering a violent eruption.

Significance

Kezlaf used the Eruptor originally as a means of disposing of troublesome populations. He openly declared its existence directly before using it to destroy Zaiyev, after which it was more useful as a tool of suppression by fear.

Because of the secrecy surrounding its existence, the Eruptor cannot be mass-produced. The last known Eruptor was detonated aboveground in 2044 Vol, precipitating the Aktergean Evacuation.
