Tamashii no Akari (tamaɕiː no akari)

Tamashii no Akari is one of the largest and best-known lighthouses in the Ring of Light. The temple complex that surrounds the lighthouse actually predates the Order of the Lightkeepers by a decade, but the actual lighthouse was not constructed until nearly three centuries later. It is located atop the cliffs that line the western coast of Sazanami, overlooking the Nichibotsu Sea. Tamashii no Akari stands 270 feet tall, making it the second tallest lighthouse in the Ring of Light, after the Fáros Óneiro.

Tamashii no Akari is sometimes known as the Ghost's Lighthouse. The priests of the Tamashii no Akari have undertaken the mission to guide lost souls to their final rest, and it is said that the light of the Tamashii no Akari can be seen by all those who are on the edge of death, wherever they may be. For most who pass on, the light of the Tamashii no Akari helps to orient them so that their Pneuma and Eidolon can find their proper places in the universe. However, as is detailed in Death and What Comes After, some spirits remain in a liminal state after death. The priests of the Tamashii no Akari undertake to find those beings who linger between life and death and assist them in passing on, whether they wish to or not.

The Kami of the Tamashii no Akari is named Shininami. She stands at the gates of the underworld, and makes certain that all go to where they are intended. According to Watali and Yanjin folklore, the ghosts of all who die in the Empire of Wamato travel to the Tamashii no Akari in order to pass through Shininami's gate. While those who die elsewhere may find other passages into the afterlife, Shininami feels responsible for making sure that all spirits go where they ought to after death. Because of this, she will often send her priests out across the Great Ring in order to assist the lingering spirits on their way. They are typically welcomed in the various lighthouses of the Ring of Light, and will sometimes work with the clerics of other gods who share the same aims in regards to the spirits of the dead.
