Aethry

The Aethry are winged humanoids, closely resembling humans in appearance. They are descended from humans blessed and transformed by the god Ídhi, and possess unique characteristics that set them apart from other races.   Aethry flight is an awe-inspiring spectacle, yet it carries a peculiar limitation. Their magical connection to the world inhibits their ability to carry iron and steel aloft. Objects made of these metals seems to increase their weight tenfold, creating a substantial burden for the winged beings. As a result, the Aethry refrain from utilizing steel or iron in objects intended to be carried while airborne, favoring alternative materials that are lighter and more compatible with the nature of their flight.   Their wings also present challenges when it comes to armor, as it weighs them down significantly during flight and limits their maneuverability. Consequently, Aethry find traditional armor cumbersome and opt for lighter protective gear that doesn't impede their wing movements. Even when they do wear armor, their wings are always exposed to potential attack.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Aethry possess a blend of Human and avian characteristics. Their anatomy closely resembles that of humans, with olive-toned skin and a physique that tends towards a longer, leaner, and lighter build. Their muscles, particularly in exceptional specimens, exhibit a chiseled appearance reminiscent of classical sculptures. Notably, Aethry have broad shoulders and well-developed back and chest muscles, essential for powering their impressive wings. These wings, reminiscent of a seagull's, are adorned with feathers that are darker on top and have lighter shades underneath. The darker feathers typically are grey, brown, or black. The wingspan of the Aethry can extend up to 10 to 12 feet or even more, and when not in use, they can be neatly folded onto their backs. They have an average height of 5 ½ to a little over 6 feet, and weigh between 90 to 150 pounds. Their bones are hollow, and they are much lighter for their size than other humanoids.

Genetics and Reproduction

Aethry lineage traces back to humans who received a divine blessing and transformation from the god Ídhi. This divine influence altered their genetic makeup, imbuing them with the ability to sprout wings and fly. They reproduce sexually, with males and females being roughly similar in size and appearance. Aethry give birth to live young, nurturing them with care and attention until they are capable of independent flight.

Growth Rate & Stages

The growth rate of the Aethry follows a pattern similar to that of humans. They undergo infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, each stage marked by distinct physical and mental developments. Aethry infants require attentive care and nourishment, relying on their parents' milk-like sustenance until they can sustain themselves on a plant-based diet. During their childhood and adolescence, Aethry gradually develop the strength, coordination, and flight skills necessary to navigate the skies. Upon reaching adulthood, they are fully capable of utilizing their wings and assuming their role in Aethry society.

Ecology and Habitats

Their settlements are often nestled within lush, elevated areas, providing convenient takeoff and landing points for their flights. Aethry appreciate open spaces and clear skies, as they rely on unrestricted airspace to fully utilize their wings and engage in their natural behaviors. They build their cities on the tops of tall cliffs, where they can leap into the air at will.

Dietary Needs and Habits

As herbivores, the Aethry subsist solely on a plant-based diet. They possess specialized digestive systems that efficiently process and extract nutrients from various fruits, vegetables, and other vegetation. Consuming meat or animal products is not only unpalatable but also detrimental to their health, often resulting in illness. Aethry have developed a profound appreciation for the diverse flora that inhabits their islands, actively seeking out nutrient-rich sources to sustain their energy-intensive flights.

Biological Cycle

The Aethry experience a diurnal biological cycle, aligned with the rising and setting of the sun. Their bodies have adapted to the rhythm of day and night, with their flight and activities peaking during the daylight hours. Aethry often seek sheltered roosting spots during the night, where they rest and conserve their energy for the coming day's activities. This cyclical pattern allows them to synchronize their behaviors with the natural ebb and flow of their environment.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

While the Aethry possess good visual acuity and hearing, their sense of smell and taste is comparatively less acute than that of other races. This diminished olfactory and gustatory sensitivity affects their ability to discern subtle scents and flavors, making them rely more heavily on their other senses, particularly their vision and hearing, to navigate and interact with their environment.
