Richterland of Galeo

Aut geelèn, in.   From many, one.
— Galvan motto
Regrouping several smaller semi-independent states, the Richterland of Galeo is one of the twelve successor states of the former Binian League. Ruled in name by the Galeorichter in the nation's capital on the northern coast of Algonas, the nation is split among many competing factions who all aim to end up the most powerful force in the land while simultaneously protecting themselves from encroaching Valender to the south and the political machinations of the nations to the east.

A Land of Stone and Water

The enduring image of Galeo is that of an ancient but sturdy castle jutting out over one of the many great rivers that flow through the land. Time has brought stability to the land, so many of these castles have not seen outright conflict in a generation or two. This leads many to conclude that it's only a matter of time before a great conqueror comes to either subjugate the various lendy under one absolute ruler or worse, a foreign nation takes advantage of the lull in hostilities to break them apart or turn them against each other. Others claim that their peace is only true for some of the lendy, as the south in particular has seen border clashes with the rapidly expanding Richterland of Valent and the Richterlendy to the east have set their eyes on many of the choicest river crossings.

Structure (or lack thereof)

The Richterland of Galeo is for all intents and purposes a feudalistic state. The Galeorichter is owed military service and is doted on by the various Erlèn at their court in Rapulari. They, in turn, are owed service by the many small Erlèn and minor nobles of the land. In addition to this, a variety of various higher-ranking members of the Galvan Church of the Crossroads and representatives of the eight local Palatirprofizlendy owe at least a modicum of aid to the Richter in times of need, although they rarely are required to get this involved in affairs of the state.   This loose structure, however, truly leaves behind a power vacuum. People are forced to split their allegiance between their local lord, the Erland they are a part of, the nation as a whole, their favoured deity of the Galvan pantheon and the Palatirprofizèn who claim to be the "true" representatives of the Binian divine caste on Dreandril. Dozens of factions jostle for prestige and the attention of the Richter while the average commoner is simply dragged along for the ride.

Stability

What little peace that exists in the Richterland of Galeo is clearly hard-won. The current ruler, Galeorichter Zevel III Bliebl, has all but banned conflict among the nobility and outside wars with foreign nations except in self-defence, a clear departure from the warmongering nature of his predecessors. Instead, he has poured his energy into the promotion of Galvan culture and the arts, himself an avid historian and lover of education. Some decry the turn toward a more defensive rather than offensive foreign policy, but the policy has led to a few years of calm in a world wracked with violence.

A Crisis Brews

As if the precarious nature of the feudal system wasn't difficult enough to handle, the Richter also has to deal with internal factions within their own family. Namely, there is a sizeable resistance to the Richter's lax ruling style from a group calling themselves the King's Knightmare, believed to be headed by a Hoofkin claimant to the throne itself.   Other rumours circulating in the northern Markerlendy claim that a new religion is growing in followers, centred around the murdered priests of ancient pre-Binian deities. This group, calling themselves (among other names) the Vepbrun Martyrs, have been rarely seen in small villages in the recent past, but the number of people concerned about their rise to power grows year by year.
