The Warring Twins
Long ago, just before Uranus was struck down by his titan children, the icon of the sky dropped a part of his essence towards the earth. This fraction of his divinity found itself absorbed by a man, who became hailed as a great hero. The divinity was passed along throughout his bloodline, lying dormant until one day a set of twins were born. These young boys were the mirror image of each other, and so their parents decided to call them Zenera and Arenez. The boys grew up very tight, unaware of their powers. Until the day came when an oracle came to the town, bringing word of the brothers’ divinity. The oracle told the now young man that they should venture up to Mount Olympus, such that they could be embraced by the other gods. Astonished by the news, the two set out to climb the home of the gods. After a long journey, they finally arrived. Welcomed by Aphrodite, who already expected their arrival, she let Zenera and Arenez into the holy halls where they met with the other gods. Yet, counteractive to the word of the oracle, the gods did not accept them. Zeus in particular spoke up heavily against the brothers being present in Olympus, denouncing their divinity, calling them mere mortals that forgot their place cursed with the blood of a savage icon. Burdened with disappointment and disdain, the young men left Olympus.
However, as time passed, the two managed to gain the approval of the other gods. First Zenera, who stopped the rampaging Helios and slew the traitorous Uranus. He was elected the god of angels, exarch of the heavens. Later, Arenez found himself accepted as well, but in less fortunate circumstances. The second twin had joined with Hades, serving him as the warden of the underworld, chosen to keep demonkind locked in its depths. He gained recognition after slaying a great demon and absorbing his power. For this achievement, the gods granted him the title god of demons. Whereas Zenera was recognized as a full-fletched god on the same level as the Olympians, Arenez was forced to be a subordinate of Hades, a mere second-rate deity.
Due to this inequality, Arenez found himself displeased with his current position, eventually causing him to revolt against Hades. Arenez succeeded in this, yet it cost him his relations with the other gods. The poor standing between Arenez and the other deities eventually escalated with Arenez declaring war on the Olympians. Still, Zenera found it difficult to see his brother at the mercy of the gods, so he proposed that he would face Arenez in their stead. With the gods agreeing, the first war between the twins began. Zenera would eventually gain the upper hand, however, he did not manage this on his own. Each time the twins clashed neither of them could win, so equal were their strengths. Due to the continued stalemate, the other gods decided to interfere, ensuring victory for Olympus. The gods sealed Arenez and his domain, Asmodeus, yet never did the seal last for more than a few centuries. And such, the conflict repeated itself. With Arenez breaking the seal that was placed over the underworld after each defeat, he would rally his troops once again and be locked in battle with Zenera and his angels. On the 12th iteration of the war, Zenera had enough. After Arenez’s defeat, he ordered an invasion of the underworld. The other gods saw this as a grave offense, as Zenera technically attacked the domain of Hades. For his insolence, Zenera was imprisoned. With this imprisonment, the gods realized that something had to be done to stop Arenez once and for all. Although they previously never dared to assault the demon god in his own domain, they voted to do so this time. Succeeding in this task they properly imprisoned Arenez as well as sealing away his followers in the great cities he constructed.
And so the wars came to an end. Over the centuries the clashes between the divine twins had caused great devastation, often destroying entire city-states or severely damaging empires. But with the eventual interference of the other gods, both brothers sealed away and a millennium has managed to pass without a new war. This will continue to be the case as long as the two remain locked up.
