Arenez, Warden of the Underworld

Arenez is a figure in Hipodean mythology. He was revered as the god of demons and bestowed the title of warden of the underworld. He is a controversial god, being despised by the rest of the pantheon due to his role as part of The Warring Twins. Although he was tasked with keeping all demons locked up in the underworld, a task that he did commit himself to, he raised an army of demons to assault the other gods. With this single act, he broke all that is holy to the gods. He defied his assigned duties, rejected the established order, and sought to defy the faiths. Within the Hipodean realm, there is nothing more despised than the three of these crimes.

Abilities

Arenez is aligned with the element of darkness, enabling him to control shades and transform into them. He absorbed the power of a greater flame demon, giving him the ability to conjure up scorching purple flames. Arenez can also create a limited amount of objects using these flames. Through this method, he “forges” his weapons out of thin air. Arenez is known to conjure up two sets of weaponry; a double-edged longsword plus a broad, round shield, and a pair of chain blades that he can control with great accuracy. Additionally, the god possesses exceptionally though skin and the ability to slowly heal even the gravest wounds using his flames.

Mythos

Enraged by the god's rejectence, Arenez left Olympus, leaving his brother behind. Intend to return to his birthplace, the young man set out onto his return journey. However, upon his arrival, he was met with despair. In the brothers’ absence, some kind of assault was launched on their hometown. This assault left nothing but ashes and ruins. It was at this moment that Hades appeared before Arenez. Hades offered the to-be god a place in his court, explaining that he saw the potential of the brothers, unlike the rest of his family. With Zenera already being picked up by Aphrodite, Hades spared little time with confronting Arenez. Without a home to return to, Arenez accepted Hades’ offer and went with him to the underworld. Once arrived, Hades devised a way for Arenez to prove himself in the eyes of the other gods. The lord of the death appointed Arenez with the task to guard demonkind, ensuring that they would not escape from the underworld into the mortal realm. And so Arenez became the warden of the underworld. After hearing of Zenera’s indictment as the god of angels, Arenez grew hopeful. He had found a new interest in the gods’ acknowledgment, yet his prospects were grim. Knowing he had to do more to prove himself, the warden pleaded with Hades. The god presented him with an opportunity. In the darkest depths of the underworld existed a terrifying greater demon. A flame lord that commanded a strong following and even greater power. If Arenez were to slay the demon, he could obtain its power, which would surely make him worthy to be called a true deity. And that was what happened, with Hades’ help, Arenez slew the demon and took his flames for himself. With the power he now possessed, even Zeus was forced to acknowledge the young god. After long contemplation, the gods eventually agreed upon Arenez’s new title. From then on, the second brother was known as Arenez, god of demons.   For a long time, everything went as well as things could be, yet over time Arenez grew dissatisfied. Unlike his brother, with whom he still held good relations at this point, the demon god did not rule over any domain, being merely a subservient of Hades. With his faith now tied to the underworld, Arenez felt he was held down by the other gods, forced to be a servant to a man he could no longer stand. And so, Arenez did something drastic. He rebelled against his greater, seeking independent rule over the lands of Asmodeus. Using an army of demons, Arenez succeeded into realizing his wishes. Yet these actions came with consequences. Although the other gods did not interfere with the ordeal, believing that it was an internal affair of the underworld, Arenez lost all his favor with the rest of the deities. Even his brother Zenera denounced his actions. But this did not matter to Arenez, he had obtained his freedom. The god did not waste any time, he quickly recreated the order in his new domain, rewarding those who had followed him into battle. He copied the design of his brother, constructing 26 great cities for his followers to live in. A new area had begun in the underworld, and Arenez was in its center.   Yet not all was as bright as Arenez believed it to be. Although none of the other gods directly interfered with the underworld, the found their ways to make Arenez’s life as difficult as they could make it. Scorned by the other gods, Arenez’s disdane grew into hatred. Until the point when the god of demons resorted to war. Arenez ordered his followers to invade the heavens themselves in an attempt to destroy the Olympian. The gods were furious, yet Zenera interfered in their rage, suggesting that he and his angels should be the ones to take care of the issue. Amused by the idea, the gods agreed. The two brothers clashed, time and time again, yet neither of them could win, being of equal strength. In the end, it was the influence of the other gods that quelled the tides in Zenera’s favor. With Arenez defeated, Asmodeus was sealed by the gods. The seal, however, would only hold temporarely and once it was gone, Arenez continued his war. After the 12th time, the gods finally managed to properly imprison the renegade deity. They also sealed all the great cities that remained, taking care of Arenez’s followers. Unfortunately for the gods, Arenez proved stronger than expected and slowly over time he managed to free himself. Now released, Arenez awaits the time he has regained his full powers, such that he can free his cities and continue his war once more.
