Emerald Dragon Species in The Known World | World Anvil

Emerald Dragon

Emerald dragons are slow to anger and among the most even-tempered of all prismatic dragons. They are caring and parental by nature. They live to see smaller races as creatures to be nurtured and protected, if only from the sidelines. An emerald dragon will often seek out individuals of the smaller races who interest them and take great care to see them blossom throughout their short lives, often keeping their distance in a humanoid form as they do.   It is not unheard of for an emerald dragon in disguise to adopt a multitude of lost children or animals as their own offspring or pets. Many tales have been woven of individuals lost in forests or jungles coming upon an enlightening chance encounter with an emerald dragon. There are even accounts of emerald dragons adopting humanoid forms to live simple lives as gardeners.   Emerald dragons make their lairs deep within forests far away from the realms of civilizations, and will often compete fiercely with green dragons for territory. It is easy to tell when one is near the lair of an emerald dragon. Their lairs will often take the shape of an isolated garden grove of beautifully cultivated flora and fauna. Intruders should beware, as an emerald dragon will fiercely defend its grove and the creatures within it.   An emerald dragon may spend its time creating what it sees as its own perfect garden paradise. Sometimes they will spend the entirety of their life cultivating the largest tree in any given forest domain if only to show as a symbol of status.   An emerald dragon's hoard mostly consists of rare flowers and herbs grown in their gardens. Some species of plant or flower can only exist within an emerald dragon's hoard, some of which can be used to brew the most powerful potions. An emerald dragon may even flaunt its cultivation skills by adorning itself in a mane of greenery to match its glistening emerald scales.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 2d10+10 piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 2d6+10 slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 19 2d8+10 bludgeoning damage.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 21 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Breath Weapons (Recharge 5-6). The dragon uses one of the following breath weapons.

Bramble Breath. The dragon summons brambles in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 67 15d8 magical piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Paralyzing Breath. The dragon exhales paralyzing gas in a 90- foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 24 Contitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Change Shape. The dragon magically polymorphs into a humanoid or beast that has a challenge rating no higher than its own, or back into its true form. It reverts to its true form if it dies. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying is absorbed or borne by the new form (the dragon's choice).
In a new form, the dragon retains its alignment, hit points, Hit Dice, ability to speak, proficiencies, Legendary Resistance, lair actions, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores, as well as this action. Its statistics and capabilities are otherwise replaced by those of the new form, except any class features or legendary actions of that form.

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Ancient Silver Dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 15 ft. of the dragon must succeed on a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw or take 17 2d6+10 bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Genetic Ancestor(s)
Scientific Name
Draconus Vitae
Lifespan
800-1000 years
Average Physique
Reminiscent of the tallest trees, emerald dragons are equally as slender and imposing. They have long, serpentine bodies which enable them to hide amidst the densest of foliage and undergrowth. They have large, graceful wings laced with vines and leaves.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
When an emerald wyrmling hatches, its scales are a deep shade of forest green with brighter emerald flecks scattered across its hide. When it grows older, these flecks grow in size and become more vibrant in color until its entire hide is reminiscent of glittering, emerald gemstones. An emerald dragon will often decorate itself in greenery to enable itself to blend in with its forest or jungle surroundings.
