Aegis of Avalor

The Aegis of Avalor, otherwise known as the King's Council, was founded within the first year of King Rynhold's rule. The King found that ruling a kingdom the size of Avalor was much more difficult than when he was the ruler of the much smaller kingdom of Kroubia. Now that the North was united, Rynhold decided to set up a small council of advisors that would institute policy at his command.
The council essentially forms the "governing cabinet" of the kingdom. Members are appointed to their position by the King and can theoretically they can be dismissed at will by the King. However this practice is rarely used because it might lead to undesirable political fallout. That said, the king serves as the head of the council and takes note of its recommendations. Only the king has the power to make the council's decisions into law.
Since the council tends to meet on a weekly basis, they meet at the Citadel of Renada, the same building that houses the King's throne. The council consists of seven positions that are non-hereditary, only appointed by the king. From time to time there are vacancies on the council due to it's members traveling across all of Avalor. When that happens, the council member may appoint a delegate to stand in for them, provided the King approves. Other options include the use of quick-spell books that can communicate in real time with the council.
The Aegis of Avalor is organized as follows:

• The 3rd Hand: Head of council, acts with the king's voice in his absence
• The Devoted: Head of the faith
• The Golden Hand: The realms chief treasurer and bookkeeper
• Warden of Order: The realms chief judge and head of the magical order, represents the king on the Wizard's council
• Sentinel of the Seas: The realms chief naval officer and coordinates the realms naval defenses
• The Silver Hand: The realms chief intelligence and spy master
• Marshall of Lions Bane: Head of the King's Guard and the realm's chief military advisor

The four Sheriff's of Avalor are unofficial members of the council but can be called back to the capital if the King has need of them. The Sheriff's act as regional governors and enforce the King's laws and protect the kingdom's borders. Those roles are usually filled with members of the King's direct bloodline, most of the time siblings of the King or Queen.
