Cori of the Skullbrood Clan Character in The Great Tree | World Anvil

Cori of the Skullbrood Clan

As seen in
Michéle staggered into the main square, his armor half on. The flintlock pistol raised at the settling cloud of dust. His guard poised, rifles raised, his patrols having drawn their sabers ready to intercept the monster. The crowd being ushered away by The Watch, trying to clear the area should the beast charge again. If his information was correct, something was already fighting the serpent, numerous visual reports of the entity having protected the Citizens.   A small gust of wind blew through, clearing the area. Michéle heard the sound of innumerable hammers being cocked as the blood cloaked goblin stood atop the monster looking over its shoulder at him. "HOLD!" He shouted.
His honor getting the better of his prejudice. This thing had protected his charges when he was slow to react, it had done him a favor. Knowingly or not. Pointing at the unwelcome party, he nodded his head in the direction of the Southern gates of Glaion.   Without missing a beat, the goblin sprinted through the crowd and away from the crowd. The deafening roar of the spectators echoed off the walls as the only good goblin fled from its adoring throngs.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

She is an athletic looking warrior, with a large iron ring through her ear and nose, with a soft face.

Body Features

She is an average build for most in the clan, though her appearance is deceptive as she is quite dense in muscle mass. Her arms are heavily corded, and a grip of iron, weighing nearly as much as Knoll. She appears slim, but this is more due to her proportions, being as tall as the men in the clan, it hides her weight well.

Identifying Characteristics

A large Iron earing in her left ear, and a brass nose ring.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

In her early days of raiding, her crew was following an overgrown basilisk, trying to kill it. The Village had deemed it a threat and needed to be eliminated. The beast had become more aggressive during the spring mating season for the overgrown lizard. Furiously protective of its lair, chasing away the family as it tried to fish the reefs near its home. Occasionally stalking the goblins through the forest, though never attacking. The goblins needed the fishing location back, as well as the peace of mind the monster wouldn't attack any of the clan.

The crew and her had cornered the beast against one of the bluff faces close to the Glaion dockside, it had gotten spooked and charged the crew. Most had gotten out of the way except for Cori, being caught under it. She managed to not be trampled by the reptile by jamming her two hook knives into its leg as it ran. Only problem was, if she let go she would be trampled regardless.

She struggled to its back by using the knives to climb up the beast, much to the beasts displeasure. She had gotten on the back of its neck by the time the beast ran through the city gates. Realizing where she was, she thought about jumping off and running away, though she also thought about the glory she would get by bringing the monster down here. Slick in its blood, she blinded the reptile, and started clawing away at the sides of its neck.

Aware of the danger of being in the City and being accused of the beast's presence here. So she took great pains to keep the monster from attacking anyone else. Slashing at the corrosive tongue it whipped at the passersby, jamming her knives into its jaw when it attempted to snap at the growing crowd. After a few minutes she had cut open it's artery.

Its raspy screech filled the market square, flailing around trying to rid itself of the pint sized marauder. Overcompensating, losing too much of its blood, it reared and fell landed with an earth rumbling crash. Cori, nimbly swinging herself onto its front while it fell, her knives firmly jamming into the back of its neck while it landed. As the dust settled around the two, she emerged poised atop the fallen beast.

The crowd around her erupted in cheers as it succumbed to its death throes, she quickly pried off one of the metallic blue scales below its eyes. She kept this as a memento of the moment, as she saw the City Watch flooding into the market square where it brought them. The watch nervously watching as the cloud dispersed, leaving Cori alone victorious covered in the basilisk's blood.

The City had spared her under the direct order of the Chancellor. He stated that she would not be welcome in the city, but because she had slew the beast they would let her leave. She sprinted out of the city, not stopping for anything until she got back to the raid crew just outside the outer ring of the city.

She holds a special respect for the city because of this event. They had let her live, and did nothing to hinder her on the way out. She later began pushing the other raiders to make their raids look like monster attacks. She believed this would make the city think they were helping more than hindering. She was right in a sense, though her brief foray into the city had made her realize that these were actual people they attacked. She never forgot that.

She spent more and more time in the village as time went on. She had seen much inside the city, she vividly remembered passing a mural painted on a wall, remembering it in slow motion. Taken in by the bright colors, the attention to detail, still remembering the smile that was on her face. It was at this time she had found her cave and began painting, herself.

She later learned the spear after Ilgor had become a raid leader, she was peerless after only a short while. She fought and moved like a stream flowing through a rocky terrain. Fluid, ever moving, always able to get past a defense. She also liked the way the new raid leader conducted herself on raids, she felt that this might be a much better way of doing things for the clan. At this point she also became one of Ilgor's scouts, despite already being a part of the current Chief Yorm raid crew.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Despite the Goblins not being well received in the outside world, Cori did gain quite a bit of notoriety by hunting a fully grown Basilisk all the way through the market center of Glaion. She is locally known as the Goblin Saint, as the beast attempted to attack anything it its path, she had slashed at it's open mouth with each attempt. Earning herself the respect of the city in the process, though she was young at the time, many don't recognize her without her earring.

Significant to her much later in life beyond that she was able to take down a large and powerful predator in dangerous territory, she realized a much bigger revilation. While she listened to Ilgor and her plans to change the view on their people, she remembered how the city let her go. She had laid a certain amount of ground work to the City that not all Goblins are solely focused on raiding. That the goblins would protect innocent people should they want to, as she did.

Proud in her ability to have taught the clan that isn't allowed to leave, how to fight. Wanting to keep them safe, should something ever happen when the raiders are away. Her joy at seeing the family progress, is quite infectious. Also proud in her skill with the spear and how she was able to teach this new skill to everyone else.

Intellectual Characteristics

She is very socially intelligent, having a tendency toward reading the room. She has a knack for knowing when something should be said versus not. She learns by watching the other's and what they do, needing very little in the way of explanation.

Though she struggles with being taught something that doesn't involve movement. Having a hard time learning to read and write without having to follow along by pacing or reading line by line with a finger. Though this had lent her the ability to excel in combat and anything having to do with her hands.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

At one point she had a strong desire to make her Chief Yorm the most successful that had ever been heard of, she has since forgone that desire for the greater safety of the Village. She has spent years teaching the clan combat basics, even against her Chiefs orders. She seeks to know that everyone in the clan can fight.

She also wishes to see the growth of her friend Ilgor. She sees something in her that she doesn't quite understand, only that she will be a great benefit to the clan. So she does everything she can to help raise her up, make her better.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

She is unparalleled with the spear amongst the clan.   She has a mind for people, she has a way of dealing with hostile situations and diffusing them. She has taken this to help deal with people's problems in the Village.   She also has an intuition for searching out buried metals, as a child she had taken an interest in rocks and metal nodules. She had spent many years carefully noting all the interesting rock formations around their home on the peninsula.

Likes & Dislikes

She likes to be alone while she thinks, so she spends much time wandering around the territory. She enjoys the sound of the wind through the trees, and appreciating a quiet moment.

She also likes to paint, when she can grab/steal/make her own. There is a small cave that no one has ever found just outside the village filled with her paintings. She has a predisposition to landscapes, and realism.

One particular thing always puts a smile on her face. She thoroughly enjoys when the family has a fresh catch of fish. She will spend the time to see if the clan had caught any sizable Grouper, enjoying this species specifically. Stashed away in her section of the caves with her bedroll and her armor and things she's collected; she has a flat sheet of cast iron. Having spent much time lingering around the nearby taverns in the dockside and Outerfields, she learned how to season it.

Eventually learning a bootleg version of Hibachi, she cooks her chosen fish in this style. Seasoning it with salt, garlic, ginger and miso. The sole bottle of mushroom sauce in the clan. If the clan manages to catch more, she cooks for anyone she can. It always brings her a smile when she gets to enjoy her own little event when she can.

Virtues & Personality perks

She is very well liked by the clan due to her generally positive demeanor. She is always quick to crack a joke or to share a drink with you. Having an uncanny ability to keep people engaged in conversation, she can talk for hours about nothing, but the participants are reciprocal. She tends to put the needs of the family before her own, currently she assisting the new priestess with dealing with the trauma she experienced during the Ceremony of Bhal.

Vices & Personality flaws

During her course as a raider, she has picked up many of the mental issues her culture has allowed. She spends quite a bit of time with Knoll at the 'tavern' drinking away bad memories in each other's company. While she isn't as much of a drinker as Knoll, it is not insubstantial.

Personality Quirks

She plays with her earrings when she is nervous.
