The Maze

The Maze is a location between Taranel and The Gates.   The Spiritual Travelers had to endure this maze after entering through the gate. Rather than entering the Spirit World as expected from the contents of The Field Guide, they ended up in this area.

Purpose / Function

The Maze's purpose is unknown, however, it does seem to be capable of manifesting personal details about the inhabitants. It appears to act as a challenge to those that would cross the barrier between the prime material and the spirit world. It may have to do with overcoming personal connections to the material in order to become more spiritually connected and escape ego.   The group had many hypotheses regarding what The Maze is as they traveled through it. These included the following:   This place is Hell
That it is a foyer before entering the Spirit World
that it is perhaps within The Spirit World as a mountain range or something.

Architecture

The architecture of The Maze is mostly just brick walls, floors and ceilings. The bricks have a strange pale pink color and are arranged in a rather intricate form that lacks any sort of discernible pattern. As the Spiritual Travelers moved through the halls of this maze they did notice that the bricks rearranged themselves and moved with the party.   There are portions of the maze that are instead made of dirt, and others that are made of a strange insect-like chitin that has overlapping sections like some sort of arthropod. There were also portions of the maze that were made of grey stone bricks or that had smooth linoleum. However, it is possible that this was just part of the scene that was generated by the current inhabitants.   The Maze, as noted by Agave and his persistent map making, appears to be arranged in a pattern similar to Gyrification.

History

Nothing is really known about The Maze before the Spiritual Travelers entered it for the first time. Hopefully there is a way to bypass it for future tourists though.
Personal
Within The Maze, the group of adventurers found themselves facing many trials, decisions, paths, and rooms that seemed personal in nature.   DAN Wildcloak found their brother and watched them twist and spiral into an unrecognizable form, how gruesome! The closer they got the worse the phantom image of Steve became. They ended up leaving their brother behind.   Kaswink saw a feral, fully transformed version of herself and fought against it in the hopes of protecting her friends.   Agave witnessed the wilting and death of many desert plants until they rotted to nothing at the edge of a dark hallway. Removing light sources seemed to make this hallway brighter and the walls, floor and ceiling were all covered in a strange chitin.   Namina swam into the deaths of a watery portion of the maze to find a small child and swarms of undead before fleeing back to the surface and the rest of the group.   Frode traveled along the walls of his hometown as they became more and more covered in mucus until the group found two forms of his home. One was clean but no one could remember him or the plague, the other was completely drenched in the mucus with a frightened child and two female corpses.   Hysteria managed to prevent the Spiritual Travelers from pressing into their portion of this maze, however, they later encountered a mysterious king on a tall throne. The conversations that they had with this king have yet to be revealed to the party, but by returning the crown to him the group was able to proceed through this maze and finally exit through the heart.
The Chained Man   Inside the maze, the Spiritual Travelers found yet another hallway that was dark until lightsources were illuminated. This hallway was similarly covered in that strange, overlapping chitin, however, as each torch was extinguished a word was barely heard until the question "What is knowledge?" was asked.
Paintings   The Spiritual Travelers discovered a room full of paintings.
Miscellaneous Rooms
The Spiritual Travelers also encountered many unusual rooms along with a great deal of empty rooms.   They interracted with a room full of antique bottles. Here they found a centipede which Kaswink quickly killed and disected. They also retrieved a Decanter of Endless Walnuts.   They found a room full of marbles, played with the levers and watched a pendant that seemed important to Namina fall through the ground along with several marbles. Namina attempted to retrieve it and damaged her right hand.   They found a room with a gently burning candle which looked to be wrapped in red dragon scales. This Dragon Candle would "answer questions" that were asked by the travelers and greedily accepted donations which were forgotten by those that donated them.
