The Holy Cross Memorial Hospital

This building is comprised of about 55% of a late 20th century hospital building that arrived in the free city with a full complement of staff in the last century. It is primarily run as a for-profit enterprise by The Night Nursing Staff    Some of the best medical professionals in the city live and work here; many of them never leave the compound. Unusually, this building has full electric wiring, and runs off of electricity produced by the building's original emergency generators in the basement. They have a full time staff of couriers who only provide gasoline and medical supplies to the facility.

Purpose / Function

This is a for-profit hospital. You can go here to receive medical services, traditional and magical.   Patients who are unable to pay for their medical treatments are asked to deed the rights to their physical remains to the hospital. Essentially they sign an oath-contract that the Paramedics (The hospital's elite strike force) have the right to retrieve your body upon the moment of your death and return it to the hospital. The hospital then breaks the body down for useable and saleable parts, including organs, skin, bone, teeth, blood and hair, which are generally sold in the black markets of numerous other planar alternates.    Deeding your physical remains to the hospital affords you a certain amount of hospital credit that can be spent throughout your lifetime; In fact, this is often more credit than can be spent by one person, and the hospital does allow credit to be inherited by your descendants or transferred to close family members.

Alterations

Since its arrival, the Nursing staff have bricked up the gap in the first floor, and installed a makeshift dumbwaiter system on the open side. This is also the side that houses their primary defensive apparatus, which includes several balista, and notably, one machine turret mounted on the roof. The main entrance of the building lies on this side as well.

Architecture

This is a mid 20th century, North American stye building. It is primarily constructed of red brick, and is five stories tall. The original building probably consisted of at least two wings, but only the left wing and a portion of the central structure were transported to the city. The brick is dressed with yellow sandstone around the base and around the doors.

History

This is one of the few buildings to have arrived near the Hub in the Free City that was not promptly and completely dismantled for materials.   It was unusual in that this building actually arrived with a full complement of staff, which was every person working in the hospital's East wing on the night of December 27th, 1992 (Prime Material Earth time). The doctors, custodians, and nursing staff of the building were able to defend it against scavengers and quickly re-organized themselves under the the leadership of Head Night shift nurse Krista O'Donnell into a paramilitary medical organization. While their martial prowess was certainly feared in the city, it was their decision to continue providing medical services that cemented their place as near-untouchable inside the community.   Many of the people who work in the Holy Cross Memorial hospital today are descendants of the original group of transportees, with medical knowledge being passed along family lines.
