Personal history

Adam was born many years before the Great War. As a child, he assisted his parents in their work in the Department of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (DRAI) for the human government. As a result of this, Adam stayed home with his parents, and did not attend public school, instead being homeschooled by his mother. As he grew older, he was able to help them in greater ways and even started building robots of his own. At age 25, Adam was hired at DRAI for his notably advanced and well-crafted robots, and for a time, he worked there, aiding the human government in the creation of their more advanced helper bots. He did not participate in weapons research when asked, and turned his employers down each time they offered to promote him to a weapons researcher. This caused irritability and malcontent with his employers, but he was one of the best architects they'd had, and would rather acquiesce and keep him than force the issue.   As artificial intelligence developed, Adam became wary. He saw robotics and AI moving in a direction he had no wish to engage in, and he eventually stepped down from his position, despite his superiors insistence that he stay. After some time, Adam was contacted by a government agent - for blackmail. The agent on the line revealed that a war was coming (though did not reveal the nature of the war), and gave Adam an ultimatum: return to DRAI or be hunted down and arrested. The agent's reasoning was twofold: first, Adam had more knowledge of government secrets than the government liked, and could potentially be a liability in the war. Second... after engineers at DRAI tried to reverse engineer Adam's designs, they found the true reason for Adam's robots being so advanced: they were borne of magic, not technology. At this, Adam admitted to the DRAI agent the truth: he had the ability to create artificial life, and to give the machines personalities and emotions that could not be done with the current technology. However, Adam refused, and the agent hung up.   Given his options, Adam wanted to stay in Miditeria to see what the nature of the supposed war was, but two more years later, it was revealed: the human government was bent on destroying every other race and arresting and executing every magician. Adam had seen enough. He packed up his things, and left as soon as possible, boarding a boat to Eistros. When the agents came knocking, his house was already empty.   Upon his arrival to Eistros, Adam went deep into the forest to make a new, secluded life for himself. During his first two months on Eistros, Adam was attacked mercilessly by the other races who had taken up residence there, but Adam never fought back or sought them out for revenge; after all, humanity were the ones to blame, and Adam was willing to take the punishment for being part of the human race, as well as inadvertently helping the human government develop their robots to begin with. As time went on, and Adam continually refused to fight back, the other races grew wary of his actions. They were intrigued by his pacifism, and one day, an elven representative came to question Adam, with a platoon of elven soldiers at his back.   Adam was open and honest with them; he, too, found humans' behavior to be deeply saddening and unethical, and stated that, symbolically, he had given up his humanity in favor of peace. The elves were initially taken aback, but as days passed, and Adam remained passive, they began to take his words seriously. They were still cautious, but began to offer him food every now and then. An apple, leftover meat, bread. Each and every time, Adam thanked them with genuine gratefulness, and the elves were unsure of what to do. But, they decided, he was not an immediate threat. So, in due time, they learned that Adam had no ability to make a house for himself, and offered to assist. Adam declined at first, but then as the elves insisted, he accepted. The elves gathered wood, the dwarves carved out stone, and dryads gave parts of their wood. Within two days, they had built a small cottage for Adam to live in. Adam thanked them, then said that he would not need their help again; when questioned directly, Adam was evasive, but spoke to the dwarves, asking them to give him a steady supply of stone, rock, clay, and other earthen materials for the forseeable future.   The dwarves, more amicable than the elves, obliged. At first, they could not understand why Adam needed such materials, but as he began to craft and carve the stone, they realized that he was creating golems. The elves became suspicious once more, and inquired as to their purpose. Adam, once again, was honest, and stated that the golems would only be used for chores and tasks he needed done around the cottage. The elves were once again surprised, but allowed Adam to continue. In time, Adam had created several golems that could help him build and expand, as well as keep the cottage clean.   Deeper into the forest, a meeting was called to address what should be done with Adam; they had never seen a human this pacifistic. In the end, they decided that he was permitted to remain there, and was under special protection from the elven and dwarven settlements. As Adam was deemed "safe", the other races began curiously flocking to his cottage in small parties, wanting to know more about this human who had rejected the human ways. Adam was glad for the company... for a time.   As his collection of golems grew, so too did his cottage, and with the addition of an outdoor workshop, his work became more prominent and efficient. As time wore on, he began to get lonely; the novelty of a human living in the forest had worn off, and although he was regularly visited by the other races by this point, they could not fill Adam's growing need for companionship. Adam didn't care for the idea of finding a human to live with him, and he knew that it would be asking too much of a member of another race for them to fill that role. So he struck upon a new idea: creating the perfect partner himself. A new golem, one that would be Adam's most intelligent and greatest creation yet, but more than that, a companion. Adam slaved for three days over his new golem, and once completed, he gazed upon his work: a golem designed to look and act like a human woman. He named her Cynthia.   Unfortunately, Adam had a problem: creating a golem with the emotional depth and intelligence of another human being was impossible, even for him. He resolved to find another way, and eventually found out from the other races that there was a temple dedicated to the Goddess of Earth nearby. Adam carried Cynthia through the forest, as curious eyes of all types looked on. When he arrived, he placed Cynthia upon the nearby altar, and knelt to pray, hoping that the Goddess of Earth would hear him.   For the first few minutes, Adam believed he had been unsuccessful, but as a shimmering green light suddenly appeared before him, Adam's hopes grew. There, before him, was the Goddess of Earth, smiling kindly down on him. He was humble and polite, and asked if she could breathe the life into Cynthia that he himself could not. The Goddess considered Adam, and offered him an alternative. She had seen him treat the other races with compassion and kindness, and stated that she would do far better than simply bringing Cynthia to life. Without further ado, she released a steady stream of magic into Cynthia's body, as she began to float above the altar. The Goddess then declared the task complete, and as Cynthia opened her eyes for the first time, the Goddess of Earth helped to steady her as she stood up.   The Goddess then told Adam that she had given Cynthia life, as requested, but had also given her special abilities that set her apart from any normal golem. When Adam inquired about these abilities, the Goddess simply responded with a knowing smile, and wished Adam luck. She the disappeared, leaving Adam and Cynthia alone. Cynthia asked who she was, why and how she had been created, and where they were. As Adam relayed the information to her, she began to understand her purpose, and Adam helped her walk back to the cottage with him.   At first, Cynthia's abilities did not make themselves apparent, but over time, they began to reveal themselves. Cynthia could shapeshift and turn parts of or all of her body into a liquid state, and back again. Adam was taken aback by Cynthia's goddess-given talents, but he could not have been more grateful to the Goddess of Earth for her gift.   To this day, Cynthia and Adam reside in the same cottage together, with Cynthia having taken on a protective role of Adam in addition to her companionship, much to Adam's dismay, as well as happiness.
