Restrictions
As Mystics head down their path, they take on new restrictions which help them remain spiritually clean.
Upon selecting a Rite, the Mystic must also select a Restriction. Breaking that restriction prevents the associated Rite or Way from being used until the Mystic rights their violation.
The Alarians believe that eat the flesh of another living being means taking on part of its soul, rendering a Mystic impure. Such Shamans usually live off seaweed and the digestive remnants of Tunadaarian Elk. Mystics who use the rite of Alarian Preparation must not eat meat to avoid corrupting themselves, intentionally or unintentionally.
The Istamarian rituals require the mystic to bathe only with smoke or poultices made of beaten roots, believing the swamps of the region to be tainted with a primordial evil. Such Mystics can't bathe or be in water past the lower thigh, intentionally or unintentionally. Being in the rain does not count.
The few surviving Verunian Mystics who escaped the Great Plague of Sanshideen were part of an ancient order that believed touching the dead may lead to possession of the recently deceased spirit. Mystics who follow these restrictions may not touch the flesh of the those dead. Attacks against undead creatures do not count.
The Algarkali Mystics who have survived the roaming spirits of the Farigh dunes have a sensitivity to the presence of restless spirits. Unless the Algarkali Mystics provide funerary rites for the recently deceased, such spirits will haunt them. Mystics who practice this restriction must ritually bury any humanoid corpses they discover. If they do not, a random haunting event will occur every night the Mystic attempts to rest until they do so.
The ceremonies of the Shanvarian Mystics are performed under the influence of a specific dried mushroom. Imbibing other mind altering substances including alcohol inhibits the delicate effect, preventing Mystics from properly entering their trances.
The rituals of Breggian Mystics revolve around the Reborn Fire, a large fire at the heart of Breg which over the centuries has relit itself on countless occasions. Mystics with this prohibition may not snuff or light fires, including candles, torches and wildfires.
The Rodan Mystics siphon the powers of ancient and vengeful entities who cause the dream madness. To avoid retribution Rodan Mystics give up their identities, hiding their names and faces from all others especially while using their powers. Adherents of this ritual can't take on a name or identity of any kind and shouldn't let anyone see their faces.
The Jaharians hid their tomes deep in the Archaea and forbade their Mystics from reading and writing after the Jahar-Altanagali war in the states began purging the literate from amongst their ranks. Adherents of this ritual may not read or write, even if they are technically able to.
The Mystics of the Leng perform silent rituals which connect them to the webs of Leng that stretch across the features of the Infinite God. Using one's voice while navigating these webs is perilous. Mystics who use the Lengian rituals may not speak or overtly make sounds.
Within the Hidden People, great effort must be taken to hide one's presence in the Dark Forest. No fires or cooking of food is allowed, nor can marks be made on trees or plants disturbed or harmed. Food may be harvested carefully, but only the minimum required for sustenance.
The Mystics of Satrang developed a culture of intense modesty, refusing to even own property or more items than they could carry on their backs.
The Mystics of Kedai must obstain from the comforts or companionship of the opposite sex and may not eat or sleep or socialize within 50 feet of a member of the opposite sex.
