Fae Species in The Faery Realm | World Anvil

Fae

The fae are the main residents of the Faery Realm. They are humanoid, with pointed ears and, sometimes, teeth. They either live in one of the five courts, or in their own territory that they have claimed from The Forest . Other characteristics vary, with some fae having animal features, or being more plant-like.
Fae can't lie, or break promises, so they are careful in all they say and consider humans to be temperamental, untrustworthy and lacking in honour. All fae have the ability to Glamour objects and transform them into something else. While verbal agreements are binding, for important bargains each party will spit on their hand before shaking. This sharing of saliva makes a more powerful bond and ensures the sincerity of the fae to follow-through on the agreement. Though they can lie in written medium.
Fae music was be-spelled to keep the dancers dancing, and he had no wish to be lost in the music and the partners whirling around. As a royal fae, it would have a weaker grip on him than on others, Minor fae, and humans, can’t help themselves and have to dance til it stops.
The five courts circle The Fair which is at the centre of the known region of the forest. The four that are still inhabited are Dusklight , Dawnlight , Sunlight and Moonlight . The Court of Starlight was overthrown sixteen years ago after a raid by Sunlight .
The royal fae are those who are related to the current ruling families of the five courts. Those fae who claim their own territory from the forest are known as woodland, or lower, fae.
Most of the fae were human like, though their clothing differed from what Zoe was used to at home. Most wore cloaks in varying earthen shades that only gave glimpses of the outfits underneath. She caught sight of some in the bright gauzy outfits she had seen at the dawnlight court, but others wore only white, or dark colours. And their hair was all the colours of the rainbow, with ornaments embellishing their styles. They wore furs and robes in all colours. Their hair was braided with feathers and beads in all colours. On their feet they wore what looked like rope sandals or leather slippers. Some had cat ears, or antlers, or whiskers. But they all had the pointed ears, and when they smiled she could see their pointed teeth.
Metal was uncommon in Faery as it didn’t occur there naturally and couldn’t be glamoured into something else, as it wasn’t living material. Metal and precious stones don’t exist in this realm. The earth isn’t deep enough here. Or something to do with the way faery works.
Half-fae half-human children are rare now that there is less interaction between the realms. They can have fae characteristics, but not necessarily. If their ears are pointed, then it is less prominent. Often they are ethereal, and nearly always they have a magnetic personality and draw others into their confidence as natural leaders.
Barring an accident or something, four thousand moons is a pretty average lifespan for a fae. The royal families live for longer than normal fae
fae between the age of two hundred and fifty and five hundred moons are no longer seedlings, but aren’t yet considered grown fae. They are called saplings and they spend their time honing their skills and learning about themselves. They are the core of the court parties and the most likely to cross into the human realm to play tricks on the people there.
Few fae read, so we have no need of books. Any sports we do on the mound, as you have seen. Many fae practise music, or dancing. Some draw, or commune with the surrounding nature.
