The Free Union of Magical Scholars
The Free Union of Magical Scholars is an educational and research society based in the town of Greystow in northern Tinturbean.
It was founded in 2291 APC by a group of mages led by James McPerril, who were unhappy with constitution and political control of the Institute of Magical Analytics and left Quarowl to establish a new organisation that was more in keeping with their ideals.
History
The Free Union of Magical Scholars has played a significant role at several times in the long history of Magicians' End.
At the beginning of the Time of Terrors under Provost Golkin, it resisted the pressure to endorse Synaptic Unbinding Potion when it could have joined with the Institute of Magical Analytics in actively promoting and profiting from it. Even though Golkin's Last Stand was a failure, the thought that Synaptic Unbinding Potion might not represent a universal good, had been firmly planted into the consciousness of many mages by the early outspoken refusal of the Free Union to use it and this notion became more influential as time passed.
The clandistine program for the development of the Nexorin Pathogen which finally ended the Time of Terrors is probably the Free Union's most important and enduring contribution to history, curtailing the powers of the megalomaniac mages and restoring good governance to the world under the Second Popular Ascendancy.
In the Age of Shadows, it was here that Aldebaran Smith made his vital studies into the Shadow Suckers, without which the resistance to the reinvigorated designs of the Dark Domains might have broken down.
