Owlblood Species in The Discontinuum | World Anvil

Owlblood

The Owlblood are a sapient species who have spread into the Discontinuum. They are most common in the realm of Noctaliya, which they govern, but can be found throughout the Borderlands and especially within the Twilight Realms.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Owlblood are anatomically close to the average human design common in local evolutions within the Discontinuum, but with certain features which are highly reminiscent of owls, a family of birds which are also found on many stable worlds and throughout the Twilight Realms. Owlblood have no wings and are unable to fly, but their heads are like the heads of owls, with beaks instead of mouths and their hands and feet are structured with digits somewhere between fingers and toes and claws. Their skin is protected by a covering of feathers.   Owlblood are typically somewhat taller than the base human height and they are stronger and broader across the shoulder.

Genetics and Reproduction

Owlblood are mammalian, giving birth to live young, so the females do not lay eggs.

Ecology and Habitats

Originally the Owlblood were a species that lived by hunting, both alone and in family groups. As the apex predator on Noctaliya with a non-specialist diet, there were many kinds of animals which they would take as prey. In modern times, they live in cities and with their current population levels, the lifestyle they practiced before they attained civilisation is no longer ecologically sustainable. Now they farm and they include a higher proportion of vegetable produce in their diet

Dietary Needs and Habits

Owlblood are primarily carnivores with the Bistrelle and the Xondrix being the most important prey species amongst a number of others.   Their diet does also include some plant based elements which provide them with important nutrients. The tough, woody, root vegetable, Grelk is a staple which they farm on Sunside.   Many of them have a liking for Saranjum and Phryne, which cannot be cultivated on Noctaliya, but were imported from Magicians' End via the Noctaliyan Gate when it was operating.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

It is not clear where the Owlblood originated, but they have been living on Noctaliya for a very long time and might as well be considered natives there. They live on both Sunside and Moonside and are in the early stages of speciation, based on racial traits that lend evolutionary advantages to one hemisphere or the other. As yet, however, they remain a single species.   Owlblood can also be found in other worlds within the Twilight Realms and throughout the Borderlands; most notably there is a signifcant population on Magicians' End in and around the city of Quarowl. They settled there at the beginning of the age of that realm known as the Time of Terrors. The story of how that particular group came to cross from Noctaliya to Magicians' End is recounted in the biography of Zemdath Romuth and within the history of the Time of Terrors.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Owlblood have an acute sense of hearing and excellent eyesight, particularly suited to low light levels.

Civilization and Culture

History

According to their most ancient stories, the Owlblood were given dominon over the Land of Long Shadows by the Old One, a mysterious entity who brought them to this realm from a distant heaven and told them they must rule it. The Land of Long Shadows lies close to the terminator that separates Sunside and Moonside on Noctaliya.   The prophet Brandeck Akavah is one of the earliest of their historic figures and is shown at the head of the article. He inspired the Owlblood to travel beyond the Land of Long Shadows, both into the heart of Sunside and deep into Moonside. According to legend, at a fateful time the Owlblood call the Great Division, the two Anbid brothers, Domonson and Elgid heeded the prophets call and together they founded the city of High Sun.

The stories of their later feud and its long term consequences for the politics of Sunside are too long for this article but they resonate down to the present age.   Meanwhile, their cousin Wuldrun Nazindar went into the darkness of Moonside and became the founder of the hardy race that now inhabits that harsh landscape.
