Oasis Courser Vehicle in The Cradle of Worlds | World Anvil

Oasis Courser

The Oasis Courser is the fasted way to travel the Emerald Ribbon in The Raikirian Desert . It is a large barge covered with a canvas awning, and a fore and aft castle. The Fore and Aft castles look similar, and are made of 30 ft cubes with three interior levels with a covered top deck above. The central barge area is 35 x 70 feet long.Made of a red marbled sandstone with three rows of green crystals along its underside. The canopies are rotated out every few years due to wear and tear and typically are elaborately decorated or themed. Operated by the Wardens of the Leaf and Sand , it runs weekly along the the Ribbon with occasional side stops. Floating above the ground it moves slowly and purposefully. Under its own power and propulsion it slow and ponderous, with a traveling speed of 5 miles per hour. It can however maintain that speed almost indefinitely.   In combination with the obelisks of the Ribbon it performs teleports that greatly improve on its mobility. Each obelisk is placed between 10 to 20 miles apart, though not always in a straight line. The Courser places itself above the obelisk and can teleport to the next one in the series, though at times there are several obelisks next to each other to form a branching network. Normally it takes a minute to operate the teleport, and then a few hours of loading and offloading as many communities have sprung up around the various obelisks. A few skilled operators can boost the output of the Courser and obelisks to cause these teleports to happen in a quick series of jumps without the minute start time between each. ( Jump one extra obelisk for sacrificing a lvl 3 spell slot, two extra for a lvl 4 etc) The Obelisks exist on a series of key lines and cannot just be positioned anywhere which can make for interesting serpentine layouts of jumps.   The Courser is staffed by a couple pilots, and a dozen other operators to perform obelisk maintenance, the lifts for cargo, and general operation.   Besides meat, supplies, mail and the occasional passengers, the Courser acts as one of the primary supply lines for the Wardens of the Leaf and Sand. Orala-Was  have the largest contract for the use of goods. Being one of the largest cities in the center of the Raikirian desert it usually takes up half the cargo space on every trip made by the courser.   For passengers the aft castle is switched from small cargo to cabins. The first floor being made into a kitchen, lounge and suite for wealthy passengers. The second floor into private cabins, and the third a set of open halls with the shelving having been designed to be shelves or bunk beds.
