Dragons

You know most people tend to forget that dragons are still around these days, but while they are not seen as much as a threat with the weapons we have today they should not be mistaken as harmless. - Old Knight
Since ancient times, dragons have existed across the world, being creatures of power and fury as well as intelligent creatures able to communicate with the other sentient races that existed. Despite the fading from the world view as it has progressed, they still remain powerful more than ever and never should be crossed or they will suffer a horrific fate.

History

Time of Dragons

Not much is known about the Dragons before the Cataclysm as all records of that time have been lost, but what is known about them is that even after the world came to an end they adapted and thrived in the early eras. Colonizing large swaths of territory as their own and holding them for thousands of years. However, rather than creating an advanced society, Dragons remained solitary with a single dragon controlling large areas of land to be used as hunting grounds. This led to fighting amongst their kind and kept them divided for a time as very few civilizations were capable to combat them. It was not until the rise of Dragon only known as the Dragon Overlord rose to power and forced many dragons to submit under them and began to organize into a more organized society. Creating a vast territory where dragons ruled over all with the weaker sentient races serving them and offering them tribute. This empire would last for thousands of years until finally the Era of Darkness began when their grasp on power began to unravel.   The first cracks came when the Dragons attempted to bring the races of the continent of Hetronas to their will, having already created several colonies on its outer islands and prepared to invade the continent itself. What they discovered was much more surprising, as the continent warring states have united under one banner, that being the Phoenixian Dominions, and when the Dragons demanded them to submit to their ruled, they openly defied them. Resulting in what would be forever known as the Dragon War and would see their empire fall. For it was here that they would experience a long and bloody war that would see thousands of their kind killed by races that they considered lesser than them. After many decades the dominions refused to let the Dragons gain a foothold and eventually, the Dragon Overlord who ruled for thousands of years arrived to see that they were crushed personally, only to be revealed that he was a servant of the Scion, the god of darkness to see his rule be brought to the world. It was not until the Phoenix Knight himself would slay the Dragon Overlord, ending his empire as the remaining dragons began to fight one another to claim the tile leading to large amounts of infighting and their empire scatter across the world.

Dragons of Today

Dragons still exist even in today's world but are far more reclusive than before remaining in what territories they have left and living out their lives. There are of course very few places where Dragons can call home as many of them were destroyed as the eras progressed as nations expanded and advanced themselves technologically. This led to Dragons being put on the verge of extinction more than several times until finally treaties were created to aid in preserving Dragonkind. In doing this the Dragon Enclaves were created that placed in their remaining territories and formed communities amongst each other and do whatever they want in them without the interface with the outside world. Resulting in them becoming a far more sophisticated society that defines itself through character, wisdom, and integrity as it abandons its old violent way. However, from time to time a Dragon will go rouge and go about terrorizing an area before it is eventually killed as they are often beyond reasoning.

Symbol of Power

Do you understand why the Dragon is used as a symbol for our battalion, it is pure power and that is why anyone that sees it will know to fear to use it. - Van Carno Battalion Captain
In many branches of the military and noble houses, the dragon has become their emblem meant to be respected and feared by all who gaze upon it. This mainly started in ancient during the Era of Darkness when Knights of the Kingdom of Van Carno fought in the Dragon War, those that were able to slay a Dargon were given the title of Dragon Slayer and given an emblem of the Dragon they slayed as a symbol of respect and skill. These emblems would later be made into coats of arms be made for armies all across the kingdom's military as symbols of their might. Due to the different types of dragons, each symbol can represent something different entirely. Even in today's world, the Dragon is still used for they are still powerful creatures and to use one as their symbol means they are not to be trifled with or suffer their fury should they meet on the battlefield.
