Gaezel Penumbra

White Witch Gaezel Anastasia Penumbra

The White Witch Gaezel is the crowned queen of Irrisen, and the wife of the Wizard King Kesil. Although she shares a surname with her father, Flint Penumbra, the two are rarely discussed in the same sentence, and their relationship is publicly estranged. Gaezel is arguably the strongest witch on Golarion, and is the foremost expert on ice and shadow magics.

Personal history

During the chaos of the Lost Age, the Witch Queen Anastasia was a prominent authority figure for the world, but also a political enemy of the ancient Jadwiga. While the details have gotten murky with age, historians as a whole agree that with the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment, the Jadwiga saw an opportunity to strike, and revealed a newborn daughter of Baba Yaga (and thus, a legitimate heir) to place upon the throne.

While Gaezel spent the majority of her childhood under the rule of various regents (who rose and fell in the political turmoil surrounding Anastasia's death), she was markedly clever, and possessed a raw talent for the arcane. Soon, the lesser Jadwiga that surrounded her fell to her growing rule, and by the time Gaezel was in her thirties, she had fully removed those who would see to rule from her shadow, becoming a true queen of Irrisen.

Like many of the White Witches before her, Gaezel quickly discovered the secrets to immortality, and set her sights on the world outside Whitethrone. She questioned her supposed allies, squashed her enemies, and made her holdings a threat to be reckoned with. She formed a non-aggression pact with Asmodeus, and won the hand of Wizard King Kesil, becoming largely independent of the poltical conflicts in the region. Now with total freedom, she began to focus on her people, increasing the quality of life for those who were loyal to her, and increasing her knowledge of the arcane arts.

In the modern day, Gaezel is considered a long-standing, international power, having annihilated any political rivals to come her way over the millenia. While harsh, she is loved by the majority of her people, and is seen in a positive light across the realms.

History

Although politically-motivated, the common folk believe that Kesil and Gaezel have come to love each other over time, and several plays have been written about their (heavily dramatized) romance. However, those inside the political ecosystem recognize the tension between the two, born of a mix between personal relations and duty.

History

Although Gaezel and Flint share the same last name, the two are rarely associated despite their broad infamy, given a nigh-total lack of interaction over the years. Scholars believe that Gaezel was born of Baba Yaga's trickery (i.e. without Flint's consent), which has created a certain level of distrust and disdain between the two.
