Captain Fliegel Myth in The Call of The Tree | World Anvil

Captain Fliegel

"You would think that it would be impossible to sail here, in The Pit.
Where? In a few unconnected lakes, we have here? Sewers? Even the big, salty lake the people call the Black Sea is almost completely out of reach for us.
However, there is one person who does that.
Well, a person is a little big word if we are talking about him.
There once was a homunculus, an artificial being that serves as a living Collector's Crystal.
Just as every homunculus, he served his master without hesitation.
His master was a mariner, so they both sailed near the shore and conducted research on the marine life.
During one of such trips, the storm came.
The vessel they used wasn't prepared for such weather and so it sank.
The Sea washed them up, however, it did so in a place way too far from The Tree.
The master was dead.
The homunculus wrapped him in a makeshift shroud, strapped him to his back and began his journey back to their hometown.
  Days passed.
When he finally came back, he came back to nothing.
The house of his master was sold and all of his research was either stolen, lost or destroyed.
He found the person responsible and beat them up, an action which only broken homunculus could do.
He buried his master under the lonely tree on a cliffside, they once watched Sea from.
In his broken core something called to him.
He went nobody knows where.
But where he went, he found something.
An artifact of unknown origin - a vessel.
The ship needed a heart, something that would give it energy, and there he was.
That day he became known as Captain Fliegel, a pirate, a terror of all waters.
His ship is a thing of wonder.
The fastest vessel of the Sea.
But that is not what is special about it.
The ship can completely disappear and reform in any other body of water it can fit in.
No harbor is safe from him, and he goes wherever he wants..."

Historical Basis

However, no one really knows if the story of his origin told in the legend is real or if someone just wanted to make a romantic story.
Also, no one knows why Fliegel became broken, and even if he is really broken or was he created like that.

In some, the master's house, workshop and research were burned down as he was seen as charlatan.
