The Fall Myth in The Bennorian Chronicles | World Anvil

The Fall

The Fall is the climax of the The Great War. It occurred on the island of Maezes in Eminor, what used to be it’s capitol city and once the largest trade hub in the entire archipelago.

No one is sure what caused the Great War, or even who was fighting whom. Tales reached the other islands that all the Divines were engaged in the war, but conflicting recounts said they were fighting with each other or against each other. The massive portal that connected Eminor to Highguard had been closed for days when suddenly the whole world trembled. After this all efforts to open the portal failed. Within hours massive tsunami waves crashed upon the southern shores of Winterscot and the western shores of Shiris and Inai causing massive devastation. Only a few vessels who were already far at sea returned to ports in Shiris and Winterscot to bring tales of a huge flash of darkness followed by giant waves that tossed their ships around like playthings.

Expeditions were sent to Eminor to find out what happened, only one returned to tell their tale. What they saw was shocking to all who heard. Where the port of Eminor used to be was now a vast boiling bay with a never lifting fog. They watched helplessly as one of the other expedition ships was torn apart by twisted sea monsters when it tried to enter the bay. The currents didn’t flow like they were supposed to, causing several of the ships to crash into new rock formations that rose up out of the waters. As they sailed around the island in the hopes of returning east, they found vast mountains jutting up across the now broken land. Lookouts spotted grotesque and twisted monsters, undead, and other horrors  crawling across the landscape. They never dared landfall, preferring to catch the currents back to the Shiris island and safety.

Since then many sailors have learned the new waters and currents around Maezes and the reminatns of one city have been found. Moram, on the far southeastern tip, suffered greatly but many inhabitents managed to survive, These survivors became known as the Fellfolk and had established a new city they called New Moram.

Any exploration of this shattered land reveals how massive the change to the landscape was. Sharp mountain sides are covered with the ruins of broken buildings, sheared roads, and more. Paths that go from cliff top to mountain side make no sense until you realize that the ground used to be flat. But whatever caused The Fall caused ripples in the land like someone who tossed a rock in a puddle. Those ripples are frozen in the form of jagged mountains radiating out from where Eminor used to lie.
