Peerage
  • Duke - The highest rank of nobility other than king in Evermere. This is a hereditary title and is almost impossible to strip away, even by the King or Queen. They carry significant power but also carry a great deal of responsibility. There has not been a new Dukedom appointed since the year 2468. It can only be awarded to a Lord or Lady.
  • Earl - A hereditary title which can only be awarded to a Lord or Lady. It can only be appointed by the royal family and they are second only to Dukes.
  • Count - The highest ranking position which someone not born with a title can obtain. It is hereditary and includes with it land which they are expected to oversee and can be awarded by the royal family, a Duke.
  • Baron - The lowest ranking noble title. Though the family of a Baron are awarded the titles of Lord or Lady they do not necessarily inherit the title of Baron when they pass away, it must be formally transferred to them by a higher ranking noble.
Lord and Lady are general terms of nobility which all titled nobles and their immediate families are given   Though it is normal for a wife to take their husbands surnames when they are married, it is not assumed. Where titles are concerned the family will take the name of the highest ranking noble, male or female. This can even extend beyond titles, a man will likely take his wife's name if she is significantly wealthier than he, or if her name is more established through the likes of business or personal accolades.
