Evermere's Laws of the Land

Murder   The unlawful killing of one person by another is punishable by imprisonment, forfeiture of lands and rights and/or death.   What is classfied by 'unlawful' is upto the local constabulary. Generally if a person were to be killed in a fair fight it would be considered lawful. There is a lot of nuance and room for interpretation left by the vaguery of the law though, so what may be lawful in one town, may not be lawful in another.   Slavery   No man, woman or child may be owned by another person.   Slavery is illegal in Evermere, and has been for as long as historians can tell. It seems the elves were the ones who desuaded the local tribes from taking slaves when they arrived in Evermere at the beginning of the 4th age.   Theft   The unlawful taking of another persons property is illegal and punishable by fine, imprisonment and/or forfeiture of lands and rights.   Punishments for theft are decided by local constabulary, and it generally depends on the value of what has been stolen.   Treason   Crimes against the crown and the continued prosperity of the country by one of it's own residents are punishable by imprisonment, forfeiture of lands and rights and/or death.   Punishment is usually harsh and results in either execution or a hefty prison sentence.
Evocation magic   Generally speaking Evocation magic is frowned upon in settlements, but it is illegal in most royally chartered settlements. The punishment depends on the consequences. A person using a touch spell would likely get no more than a slap on the wrist, a projectile may get a fine or short term in jail, but a person casting an area of effect spell would get more severe punishment. A person accidently burning down a building and/or killing innocent bystanders in the attack would most likely be executed, unless the circumstances were deemed to be of sufficient cause.   Like all laws in Evermere, there is room for interpretation by the local constabulary
