Indralites

The Indralites are the elite standing army of Evermere. They are not lavishly adorned. Their armour and weapons are simple in appearence, but are masterfully made and of the highest quality and material. As carreer soldiers, most veterans have upgraded their own equipment and it is not uncommon for them to carry gear made from exotic materials.   There most distinguishing piece of garb is the long green cloak they wear, both a sign of there rank and a practical way to keep warm on long patrols. Other than that their simple armour is uniform and fairly light, allowing them to remain mobile on the battlefield. They are not only formidable knights but expert skirmishers, especially on horseback.   The name Indralites comes from Queen Indras Falstheath 1st, the monarch who first established their ranks. Keeping a highly trained standing army is, and has alwasys been, a difficult logistical matter. Highly trained soldiers not only take time and money to produce, but demand a higher salary than the average guard, conscript or infantry man. Queen Indras came up with the idea of founding a new regiment trained as both cavalry and infantry, and established the 'Charter of National Strength'. This charter stated that settlements tithed to the crown would have to employ this new regiment as guards in times of peace, and would gain tax benefits for doing so. This worked three fold; Firslty the crown would not need to directly fund it's army during times of peace, secondly towns and cities under the crowns banner would have a contingent of highly trained militia members who's did not cost much more than the average guard, but who's experience, equipment and training made them worth three or four of them, and thirdly members of the the Indralites would continue to be paid a high salary while being able to take posts near family and friends.   The men and woman of the regiment are selected at a young age and begin proper training at the age of 12. It is a gruelling process but it produces some of the most disciplined and well trained soldiers in Thaeria. On completion they are given basic gear, a war horse and are implanted with a rune stone in the palm of their hands. This stone makes it so they are hard to impersonate, but also seems to have some arcane significance. Some say it enhances or bestows magic abilities upon them, others say it is a means of communication or control. They tend not to be overly open when talking about it, so the stories can differ wildly.
